July '08 U.S. Metro Population Estimates-Top 20

It's a lazy rainy afternoon in Atlanta so I thought I'd throw up the latest population estimates released by the Census Bureau for US Metros, top 20. These are the metropolitan area estimates (not the combined statistical area estimates). Top gainers over the last year (in numbers, not percent) were 1. Dallas-Ft Worth-Arlington, 2. Houston-Sugarland-Baytown, 3. Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale, 4. Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta, and 5. Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana. The number shown is the July 1, 2008 estimate.

1. New York-Northern New Jersey-Long Is., NY-NJ-PA 19,006,798
2. Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana, CA 12,872,808

12. Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale, AZ 4,281,899
13. San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont, CA 4,274,531

#2 & #14 should be combined soon for obvious reasons.

They are combined, in terms of the census bureau's definition of "combined statistical areas". Maybe the particular census bureau definition of "metro" keeps them separated. Here's the same list for "combined statistical areas". Some metros, like Miami and Phoenix, do not have a corresponding combined statistical area, so in those cases, I added them to this list with their metro populations.

1. New York-Newark-Bridgeport, NY-NJ-CT-PA 22,154,752
2. Los Angeles-Long Beach-Riverside, CA 17,786,419
3. Chicago-Naperville-Michigan City, IL-IN-WI 9,793,036
4. Washington-Baltimore-Northern Virginia, DC-MD-VA-WV 8,295,397
5. Boston-Worcester-Manchester, MA-RI-NH 7,514,759
6. San Jose-San Francisco-Oakland, CA 7,354,555
7. Dallas-Fort Worth, TX 6,655,261
8. Philadelphia-Camden-Vineland, PA-NJ-DE-MD 6,398,896
9. Houston-Baytown-Huntsville, TX 5,829,620
10. Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Gainesville, GA-AL 5,729,304
12. Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach, FL 5,414,772
12. Detroit-Warren-Flint, MI 5,354,225
13. Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale, AZ 4,281,899
14. Seattle-Tacoma-Olympia, WA 4,087,033
15. Minneapolis-St. Paul-St. Cloud, MN-WI 3,562,284
16. Denver-Aurora-Boulder 3,049,562
17. San Diego-Carlsbad-San Marcos, CA 3,001,072
18. Cleveland-Akron-Elyria, OH 2,887,492
19. St. Louis-St. Charles-Farmington, MO-IL 2,879,924
20. Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, FL 2,733,761

Denver-Aurora-Boulder 2,998,878

At least in 2007 that was the number... did they drop it off CSA lists?

EDIT

Denver-Aurora-Boulder 3,049,562 CSA July 2008

Thanks, Barbula...a list assembly error on my part.

Those census tables are not easily sortable so it's a hunt and peck process to assemble a list like that. I edited the CSA table above.

If anyone else finds a discrepancy please let me know, hopefully that was the only one.

I am suprised they weren't already combined. The same thing happens in Canada though. Especially with Calgary and Toronto.

I see the decade of Atlanta is clearly over. I wonder what kind of market will emerge during the next boom period.

I'm actually kind of surprised that Cleveland and St. Louis are still on there with the amount of people they have been losing
