I wouldn't say that - the mayor is involved (but so are many other people) with economic development, which gets jobs here/expands jobs and has an impact on new development, or can.

That's not really true. New development is in part a sign of confidence in the economic / political direction and stability of a city. The Mayor resigning would probably cause a few investors to be more cautious for a short time. Also a part of the job of a Mayor is to help attract new business and investment to a city which usually requires cultivating relationships and connections over time. If the Mayor resigns certainly any deals he might be working on would be in jeopardy. Finally there is probably something to be said for Rahms resume, political connections, and time in politics. For example if a company is considering adding offices to lets say LA or Chicago I'm betting on a former White House Chief of Staff to make that deal over the Mayor of LA who was formerly a college professor of International Affairs.

This is more of what my question pertained to if investor rather out be national or international may see Chicago after all this and be a little hesitant to invest. Rahm knows and for its worth seems to be doing his part in attracting corporates to Chicago lately.

in some ways corruption improves the development landscape in a hot market

not that there's always corruption, but it's two different tracks. Look at cities in China or Mumbai etc

so far none of this is making chicago less attractive to investors. Unless people start getting shot regularly in the wrong places

Yes, this is exciting. I look forward to seeing this go up on my daily commute.

Blackhawks training center is a steaming pile. Ogden has so much potential to be a great street and everyone insists on treating it like a suburban auto sewer. Especially since this particular site is right on the doorstep of a Blue Line station.

I'm hoping the Rush expansion has a setback off Damen so the sidewalk can be widened. If the city keeps on insisting that the UC doesn't need a new Pink Line station, they should put their money where their mouth is and improve the pedestrian connections to existing transit.

That's the Village Theatre building. Ugh. Next door they are going to tear down Elly's Pancake House for the new high rise, which is fine but I wish they would save the Village Theatre building.

wait, i thought the developer of that condo building was saving/renovating the theatre, and turning it into a separate residence?

I thought so too. However, what's on the plan commission meeting could be another developer. Pretty sure Elly's has a different address.

It looks like the conversion of offices above the Oriental Theater into an apartment got its building permits on Thursday. Floors 2 through 9.

It's the same developer: http://101northavenue.com/#team

Looks like ~15 more units than the website states.

Unrelated, but I was looking through Ald. Tunney's website and saw that the Walgreens redevelopment across the street was listed as "construction to start 2016." Anyone know if this project is finally going to happen?

The building taking over the old Walgreens location is technically Lakeview since it is north of Diversey, but I've wondered why it's taken so long as well.

As for the Hampton Inn (or whatever shitty chain takes over), that may be one of the worst developments during this current boom (and given how many bad proposals have come up that is saying something), and it is really a shame the Inn at Lincoln Park is going to be demolished.

Woof. There are a dozen ways to achieve the goals they set, without pulling back from the street and not covering up that big blank sidewall. There's an alley right there, why not flip the building, push out on the west, cut in on the east, give that rooftop garden some light and air.
Is it a thing now that architects deliberately avoid blending in with the neighboring buildings?

Since 1930. Every composition must be highly novel and designed as if it is freestanding in the middle of an island.
