Denver Union Station train canopy opens TODAY????

Is this true? For god's sake guys, you've got to tell me these things!

Amtrak's California Zephyr returns to Denver Union Station on Friday night after a three-year absence and a nearly $500 million renovation of the historic rail hub.

Renovation inside Union Station is still ongoing, so Amtrak passengers will access the waiting room, ticketing and baggage office by following signs to the track side of the building at the south end, RTD said.

From there, passengers will follow signs to the newly constructed passenger platform, under the large white canopy, where they will load and unload.

Partially. The station isn't fully open yet, but Amtrak will be using it in a limited capacity, with folks still having to walk around ongoing work, as I understand it.

But the platforms, under the canopy, are open for passengers?

If I don't see photos by Monday I'm damn well banning you all.

Your threats are meaningless after the failed VelociRFTA-by-Halloween sanctions!

But there will be pictures, yes, of course. Wouldn't miss it for anything.

It looks as if the platforms are open, but I think you have to be a ticketed passenger to access the area.

So, who's going to buy a ticket to access the area?

A one way ticket to Fort Morgan tonight is only $17 if anyone's interested. I'd buy it but people generally want good pictures.

Dan, wait until May 9th. That's when the thing opens at 2:30. I'm pretty sure that at least 3 of us will be there.

Is it possible that the Amtrak trains won't be pulling into the platforms under the canopy but, instead, use one of the uncovered platforms to the north?

Amtrak has one platform at Union Station, platform 3, and the damn train will take up the length of it. It can only pull into 3 or 4. It will be at 3 this evening barring the usual delays in the train arriving.

I'll see what I can do this weekend.. I'll try to talk my way into going on the platforms using DenverInfill / DenverUrbanism credentials! But you did, however, give me something to do tonight. I'm going to see if I can get there and take some night shots under the canopy! If you don't hear from me by tomorrow I'm in jail..

I once had to talk my way out of getting arrested by Pittsburgh police for taking pictures of their subway. And I have an Arab last name.

You can do this.

My time-lapse project gave me great practice for dealing with situations. I had to deal with everything from pissed off civilians to security guards, to 5 police cars on my ass. Tonight should be fine. I need 5 minutes max to get the shots I need, hardly enough to even make a presence.

Even though I also have a slightly exotic last name, I think I'll be fine. It's Brent I would be worried about.

Not the first time that a lawyer would have to talk their way out of something.

We need to keep at least one forum lawyer out of the clink here. And since that's probably not going to be me, I nominate you to be the sober, responsible one.

Nah we good. I had to tell the DIA popo why taking pictures of planes isn't a risk to national security.
