Dinwiddie, VA

Dinwiddie is an unincorporated community along I-85 on the Southside of Virginia, southwest of Petersburg. It is the seat of Dinwiddie County. The population is around 500.

Dinwiddie and the surrounding countryside were the site of several Civil War battles as the war was nearing its end. The Battle of Dinwiddie Court House was fought in the middle of the community on March 31, 1865, before fighting continued nearby in the Battle of Five Forks on April 1, and the Battle of Sutherland's Station on April 2. The Battle of Dinwiddie Court House was the beginning of the Appomattox Campaign, and was one of the last offensive actions of Confederate General Robert E. Lee as he tried to stop Union Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant from stretching out Confederate defensive lines between Richmond and Petersburg.
