Closure on 401W east of Napanee for cleanup

Closure is between Palace Road and L&A County Road 4.

https://mobile.twitter.com/OPP_ER/st...38974776852485

Why is 401 near Napaneee particularly accident-prone in Eastern Ontario??

Lol except, in real life, that rail overpass is used by freight traffic.

By the way, does anyone know why 401 in Napanee is such a bad spot? While cross-over collisions are very few, there are still serious crashes every now and then.

45 minutes ago, OPP closed 401E between Palace Road (L&A Road 5) and CR 4.

Through Napanee itself the 401 has pretty poor geometry. Both the interchange at Highway 41 and at Palace Road are pretty substandard to what we would build today. The curve just east of the Highway 41 interchange where it crosses the creek is pretty sharp too.

East of Napanee to Kingston, the 401 isn't very remarkable. It doesn't seem like any specific geometric elements would really lead to collisions. An engineer could design the safest highway in the world, and no matter what, someone will still find a way to kill themselves on it.

I seem to have an idea about adding 2 more lanes on 401 between Tilbury and 402.

Could it be that MTO doesn’t wanna do it until Gordie Howe Bridge is roughly halfway done so that both are finished at the same time? Or am I underestimating how long it takes to 6-lane 401 between those 2 places?

(I heard GHB will be done in 2 years.)

“401W closed at Boundary Road (Cornwall). Reopening time unknown.”

There are a lot of bad accidents on 401 around Cornwall too.

They're now saying the GHB will be finished in 2024, with construction starting this month!

A couple of up to date shots of the 401 widening in Mississauga. The future eastbound collector lanes have now been fully paved with concrete through the Mavis interchange:

That’s what I thought too. According to others, AADT drops significantly east of 416. Yet there are fatal crashes on 401 through S, D&G every now and then. It’s reopened now by the way.

As has happened repeatedly on the new section of Highway 69 south of Sudbury, despite being completely modern in every sense of the word and with relatively low traffic volumes.

What's with people doing 130 ~ 140 kph on that stretch of highway...

(These are the speeds recorded by OPP NER.)

People tend to drive quickly on roads that are designed for high-speed travel and are not congested.

I believe that most new sections of 400-series highways are engineered for 130 km/h.

There is simply limitations to the physics of high speeds (more specifically: deceleration from those speeds), regardless of the engineering of highways and automobiles.

Highway 401 is closed in all directions at Exit 164.

I fear it's a head-on collision.

Exit 164 is in the middle of the reconstruction zone, where there is a temporary concrete barrier through separating bidirectional traffic. What seems more likely than a head on collision is a collision that struck and deflected the temporary concrete barrier, which would have then needed to be moved back into place before traffic could flow again.
