Thanks, Danny.

The George Street Mardi Gras - one of the biggest and best nights out in a city famous for always delivering great nightlife.

We had an AWESOME time tonight. Here are some clips in a couple of pubs, the costume contest, the Michael Jackson tribute, and a few scenes of shoulder-to-shoulder downtown St. John's:

Cape Spear - October 27, 2013

Quote:
Cape Spear, located on the Avalon Peninsula near St. John's, Newfoundland, is the easternmost point in continental North America.

The Portuguese named this location "Cabo da Esperança" which means "cape of hope", which became "Cap d'Espoir" in French and finally "Cape Spear".

Petty Harbour/Maddox Cove - October 27, 2013

Quote:
Petty Harbour – Maddox Cove is a town of approximately 950 people, the majority of Irish Roman Catholic heritage, located on the eastern shore of the Avalon Peninsula in Newfoundland and Labrador.

It is nestled deep in the heart of Motion Bay, just south of St. John's.

The present town is approximately 200 years old, though the site has been continuously occupied since at least 1598, predating the arrival of the Mayflower and making it one of the oldest European settlements in North America.

During King William's War, the village was raided by Canadians in the Avalon Peninsula Campaign.

Topsail - October 27, 2013

Quote:
Topsail was one of eight communities which amalgamated in 1973 to form Conception Bay South, the others being Chamberlains, Manuels, Long Pond, Foxtrap, Kelligrews, Upper Gullies, and Seal Cove.

The early residents of Topsail, mainly English Anglicans with an unusually small and often unwelcome Irish Roman Catholic minority, were attracted by good growing land, abundant supplies of firewood and the more temperate climate as compared to other parts of the Avalon Peninsula.

Good communication with St. John's was established by road in the 1830s and strengthened in the 1880s with the arrival of the railway. Residents of Conception Bay South grew crops and raised cattle for the St. John's market and St. John's residents established summer homes in Conception Bay South.

I finally figured out a way to secure my cellphone to my the interior of my car. So this is an untrimmed 43-minute tour of St. John's sped up and condensed into just a few minutes.

I tried to focus on some areas that are never in the postcards, especially Georgestown (begins at 1:56) and the Old West End (begins at 5:32). These are some of the most unique (especially nonsensical street grid, mix of rowhouse styles) neighbourhoods of Old St. John's - but they're quite some distance (by the standards of a city our size) from downtown.

You also get a peek out over the highway. I just scooted out to the first Mount Pearl exit and back.

Amazing! Thanks for sharing.

That Christmas Parade in St. John´s is nice. I think, you have spent a funny and very cold morning there. ¿Is it being very cold actually is St. John´s?

Congrats and greetings from Madrid, Spain.

Are there any plans to install a streetcar network in St John's? Did it use to have one in the past?

Yes, we had one in the past. There are no current plans, but it is certainly on almost everyone's wish list. This summer they painted a city bus to look like a streetcar. So we're making slow progress.

"Can any Saints hear me?
Is there any Angel near me?
If you won't lift me up, then would you send my love,
Back to my home, back to my only shelter,
Where, in the awful weather,
I will be warm and welcome!"

St. John's is a great place to be rich...

And a great place to be middle class...

But it's not so hot if you're poor...

Tonight was the Festival of Music and Lights in Bowring Park, our equivalent of lighting up the city Christmas tree.

MERRY CHRISTMAS OR HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM ST. JOHN'S!

A cute local Christmas jingle, with lovely scenes of friends doing what we all do - walking downtown to drink, hahaha:

And here is what St. John's looks like today. We're going to have a white Christmas again! It's been a while...
