Thanks Hoss. All I can say is...that's quite a distortion!

I also thought the arrow on the left was part of a top hat.

Looking from Wall Street between 8th and 9th Streets, early 1930s

[source: California Historical Society]

Some of you may already be aware if this...but if you're not, let me share:

The California Historical Society's Digital Library has a superb collection of photographs showing Los Angeles (and some nearby cities) in 1932-1933. All are from one photographer, Anton Wagner.

There are 439 (!!) photos in the collection. Here's a link. Clicking on "Clip Image" at the top of any image will reveal a link to let you freely download a relatively high resolution jpg copy.

I stumbled across the above photo (though I can remember where) back in February, and decided to locate all of the buildings that are still standing. Here's what I came up with:

I have a two questions concerning this postcard.

#1 Where the heck is/was Johnson Garden?

#2 Can a lily pad really float with two kids on it? (or have they been superimposed into the pic)

originally from ebay Giant Lily in Johnson Garden, Hollywood Cal

That night was the Founding Ceremony for the new building and Peggy Lee was Dr. Holmes' companion [his wife Hazel was deceased]. I had met Dr. Holmes several times before.
People were polite and did not approach Peggy as this was not a celebrity event. In those days I was too shy to say anything to her. Our family had reserved seats in the first rows. My stepfather was on the Board of Directors.

The church complex had been designed by noted architect Paul Williams....he's been profiled here before. many photos of it in link below>>>>>

http://www.paulrwilliamsproject.org/...950s-churches/

The construction was a multi million dollar project. The original seating upholstery was bright blue....that's what I remember. The church building is a Los Angeles Historical site.

I was just going to ask about Ernest Holmes.

He looks like an intense fellow.

He reminds me a bit of Houdini. (looks wise)

I found the image captioned in 'Hollywood, 1900-1950, in Vintage Postcards' by Tommy Dangcil.

books.google.com

I'm assuming that the Laughlin Park they refer to is the gated community in Los Feliz which was once home to people like Cecil B DeMille, WC Fields and Charlie Chaplin. It's apparently still popular with showbusiness folks.

Was this the entrance used to transport prisoners into the courthouse? (or perhaps for coal trucks and other maintenance vehicles)

I don't know if the Parker Center has been taken down to the ground yet, but here's a shot from "The Case of the Mythical Monkeys" (first aired Feb 20, 1960)...

Another location used in the same episode was the apartment building still at the nec of Las Palmas and Waring...

That's actress Lori March--later big in soaps, apparently, and married to Alexander "The Voice" Scourby. Doing her own stunts. "The Case of the Mythical Monkeys" is a PM episodes full of interesting actors--among them March and Beverly Garland, who is excellent as Mauvis Mead, the author of a trashy novel mixed up with the mob. Normal Fell (who's easy to get mixed up with Jack Klugman) also appears--and last but not least, there is the defendant, none other than Nurse Ratched, Louise Fletcher.

And a mystery building:

Only a slightly educated guess but house #2 looks like it could be in Palos Verdes. That looks like PV stone on the facade and chimney. The style and landscaping look correct for Palos Verdes too. That's all I got.

That place was very dear to me; and I was literally stunned when one day, after it chanced I hadn't been there for about a year, I parked to eat there and the familiar Clifton's sign wasn't where it should have been!!! Bah. The location had a somewhat dim basement "lounge"--basically a restroom foyer with pay phones and plastic plants. Probably the idea was to get people who wanted to have a phone conversation away from the clatter of the plates and glassware in the dining area (as well as to get the sound of flushing away from the diners). The wooden stairs would squeak as you trod on them; and, in the close atmosphere in the foyer, there was always a smell of vinyl from the upholstery of the couches along the wall. Upstairs, in the dining area, for a long time they'd have a live organist playing off and on to entertain the customers. My earliest memory of the place--when I was quite young indeed--was that my family brought me there on my birthday, for which such occasions they'd provide a free cake with the celebrant's name on it. They brought the cake, and . . . it had the name of some unknown girl on it. There's a good side to that incident, though, as my therapists have benefited from it for decades.
Read "stairs" and immediately thought of Ah Fong's, although its exact address is now in doubt. One source lists 424 North Beverly Drive, or could it have been 466 Beverly Drive as indicated in '56 CD? http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=37671

This leads me back to Clifton's Cafeterias. Have we seen photos of Clifton's on Hollywood Blvd.? Recently noticed billboards of the era advertising this location "Holly-Western" and it is clearly listed as 5510 Hollywood Blvd. on page 2957 of the '34CD. Location would have been near the Apollo Theater.
