GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- Michigan State University is pushing forward with plans to construct two more buildings on its Grand Rapids Research Center site, the university announced Friday. MSU’s Board of Trustees authorized university administrators to enter into a public-private partnership with Health Innovation Partners to develop the projects at 400 Monroe Ave. NW, the roughly 4-acre site where the research center is located. The partnership agreement lays the groundwork for the developer to pursue the construction of a parking garage and a new building along Michigan Street, where space would be leased to MSU and other tenants...

Van Andel Arena, DeVos Performance Hall rank among busiest U.S. venues

Quote:
GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Van Andel Arena and DeVos Performance Hall have once again been recognized by music-industry publications for ranking among the busiest venues of their size in the U.S.

Among venues with a capacity between 10,001 and 15,000, Van Andel was listed as the third busiest venue in North America in 2018 by Billboard. It was also ranked as the fifth busiest venue, of its size-range, in North America by VenuesNow.

Acts such as Thomas Rhett, Elton John, Shania Twain and James Taylor contributed to the venue’s success last year, according to a news release from the Grand Rapids-Kent County Convention/Arena Authority. The CAA is the public authority that owns the arena and DeVos Performance Hall.

Meanwhile, DeVos Performance Hall was ranked 15th on VenuesNow’s top stops list among venues with capacity between 2,001 and 5,000. The performance hall hosted acts such as Lauren Daigle, Alice Cooper, Lindsey Stirling and David Byrne.

On Grand Rapids' West Side, a new, commercial-scale solar array and battery storage system was installed atop the Bridge St. Market / Meijer development, and just started up last week.

Michigan’s first ever rooftop solar array and battery storage system debuted last week in the growing area of Grand Rapids. Nearly 1,800 solar panels atop the Bridge Street Market and adjoining buildings between Bridge and First Streets within the Circuit West district are accompanied nearby by a 500-kilowatt battery.

“Today, there is very little storage on the grid, so electricity is generated just moments before you use it,” said Garrick Rochow, Consumers Energy’s senior vice president of operations. “With large batteries, we will make our grid more efficient, effective and sustainable. It’s a critical part of Michigan’s energy future and it’s happening here at Circuit West.”...

Getting a peek at a rendering for the new school portion of the Roosevelt Park redevelopment. Referred to as Southwest Community Campus High School, it is going to break ground this spring, on land purchased by the school district in January. Construction costs for the school are estimated at $20 million. The school will feature bilingual curriculum to serve the largely-Latino population of the neighborhood.

Holland-Grand Rapids commuter bus service could be reality in fall 2020

Quote:
The proposed pilot program for a commuter bus service along the Chicago Drive/I-196 corridor between Holland and Grand Rapids was presented Thursday, March 7, to the Mobile GR Commission.

If successful, the tentative service called “West Michigan Express” might then expand busing services or even evolve into a commuter rail service along the same route, said Patrick Waterman, Hudsonville city manager and chair of the West Michigan Express Task Force.

On any given weekday, 27,000 people head in either direction along the Chicago Drive corridor between Holland and Grand Rapids to get to work, according to the West Michigan Express Task Force.

The task force bills the West Michigan Express, in either bus or rail form, as a regional transportation service that would attract major employers, reduce traffic congestion, increase available parking and aid those who either can’t or don’t want to drive.

I was zipping through GR yesterday and was blown away by the amount of cranes and the activity in the downtown area. I noticed that it looked liked the project at 10 Ionia was in full gear to become a hotel.

Restored Grand Rapids office building, hotel prepare to open

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — After two years of construction, a pair of newly renovated historic buildings, located adjacent to one another in the heart of downtown Grand Rapids, are preparing to open their doors. CWD Real Estate Investment has begun leasing space at 37 Ottawa Ave. NW, a six-floor building with 90,000 square feet of commercial office and retail space. The firm also announced that a grand opening for a 130-room AC Hotel by Marriott at 50 Monroe Ave. NW is scheduled for June 3. Sam Cummings, co-managing partner at CWD, the largest property owner in Grand Rapids, called the $38 million project one of his firm’s most “difficult and ambitious” endeavors. His firm purchased the buildings in 2012...

$35M Hyatt Place hotel in downtown Grand Rapids taking shape

Quote:
GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Construction workers were busy Tuesday inside the Hyatt Place Hotel at 140 Ottawa Ave. NW in downtown Grand Rapids as they prepared the 12-story, 160-room building for its grand opening in September.

“It’s a mad dash for the end over the next couple months,” said Jason Wheeler, a spokesperson for Orion Construction, the firm overseeing the development of the $35 million hotel.

Workers broke ground on the project, which includes an adjacent 15-story office building and 430-space parking garage, in June 2017 and are now in the process of finishing the building’s interior. Floor, ceiling and wall coverings are being installed in the rooms. Bathrooms are in the process of being outfitted with showers, sinks and toilets.

PROPOSAL TO BUILD A GROCERY STORE IN EASTOWN AWAITS APPROVAL

As Grand Rapids continues to grow, unused spaces are being scouted for their potential to become a part of the thriving business community. To this end, Jacey Ehmann – president and founder of Grand Rapids’ Metric Structure – has purchased the property located at 1201 Wealthy St. SE {corner of Wealthy & Fuller} in hopes to build a grocery store.

Ehman has proposed to build a two story, 4300 square foot building on the location. The ground floor would serve as a retail space. While there is no specified use for the second floor, it is predicted that part of it will be used by the grocery store tenant.

Ehman’s proposal is currently being reviewed by the Grand Rapids Historic Preservation Commission. They have not made a formal decision on the project.

If Ehman gets the go ahead, construction will take six to eight months. The building will feature an art deco design that is in line with other properties on the corridor. It is predicted that the grocery store will be a much needed commodity filling a market gap at the location.

In the meantime, Ehman and other Grand Rapids residents will wait to find out if the project is approved. There is no estimated time on when the Commission will make a decision. Stay tuned to learn the progress of Ehman’s grocery store becoming a part of Grand Rapids’ business community.

^ Agreed, it's about time. I believe this means GR is the second city in Michigan to ever surpass 200,000 residents, though Flint might have between the '60 and '70 census.

The first bus to serve the "Laker Line" - a 13-mile route to connect GVSU to Grand Rapids - was unveiled on Monday. There was previously a route to serve this need (Route 50), but it was over-capacity. The new route will include thirteen 60-ft buses that will travel a more efficient pathway, shaving about 5 minutes off the current Route 50 travel time (from about 30 minutes currently, down to 25 minutes). The bus route will not be fully up and running until August 2020, once all fourteen stations are completed. This work is partially funded by a federal grant. Construction on some of the stations began in April. THe interactive map at this link includes construction updates along the route.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- For close to a decade, overcrowding has been an issue on the Route 50 bus line students use to get from Grand Valley State University’s Allendale campus to downtown Grand Rapids. GVSU President Thomas Haas and then-CEO of The Rapid Peter Vargas sought a solution amid growing ridership for years. Both were present Monday, June 3 to see their efforts take one step closer to reality as the first Laker Line bus was unveiled...
