The folks in that Penn Mutual tower building will have great view as this goes up. A nice way to be distracted at work.

The juxtaposition of the old (Independence Hall) against the new (the tower crane, which represents what will help 500 Walnut sprout up) is EPIC!

Agreed. In one snapshot, you have architecture from the Colonial Period, the Gilded Age, 1970's Brutalism, and a glassy modern tower.

This one turned out much better, really is amazing to see the architecture through the ages.

This is one crane we'll definitely see on establishing shots during the DNC.

The two buildings next to 500 Walnut, to the west, are they actually connected? Like, can you walk through one building into the other building on each floor? When were they built? Sorry if this was already mentioned and I missed it.

Yes they are. the older building was the original Penn mutual building, and they built the 1960s brutalist annex next to it, but both buildings originally had offices for Penn mutual insurance company.
I only know this because my father used to work in the brutalist building, and I spent a summer in high school working for him there.

Yes they are connected. There is a 9-story section built in 1913, the neoclassical tower was built as an extension of that building in 1931, and the brutalist section was built in the 1970's. I did a project on these two towers for an architecture class last week so I could tell you all about them!
