Ottawa awards design contract for $60-billion warship fleet to Lockheed Martin

The Royal Canadian Navy's 15 new warships will be built by Irving and based on the British-designed Type 26 frigate

about 2 hours ago by: Canadian Press

HALIFAX — The federal government awarded U.S. defence giant Lockheed Martin a long-awaited contract to design its $60-billion fleet of warships despite lingering questions about the selection process and a legal challenge from a rival bidder.

Procurement Minister Carla Qualtrough announced the deal in Halifax early Friday, saying the Royal Canadian Navy's 15 new warships will be built by Irving and based on the British-designed Type 26 frigate.

The Type 26 has already been chosen by the Royal Navy and by the Royal Australian Navy.
The Brits cut their order and are also building a cheaper version as this ship is overkill for many of the tasks assigned to it.

The Brits cut their order for budgetary reasons only. The original plan was to replace the Type 23 Class on a one for one basis. There were 16 type 23 class built but three were sold to Chile a number of years ago. Those Chilean ships are about to go through the same refit that Irving delivered to our Halifax Class with the addition of Lockheed Martins CMS -330 combat management system. That CMS was developed in part by the bunch at LM in Burnside.

The Brits need more than the 8 ships that have been contracted for. We need 18 not the 15 that have been announced.
