I'm pretty sure I was talking about its use in Calgary, not China. Thanks though.

Forgive my snark, but my point is that there's nothing trendy about peanut oil.

Ate at Ox and Angela's last night. Didn't even venture of the tapas section and both my dinner date and I had the best dining experience of our lives. Every plate was amazing. I think I've found my new favourite resto.

Had our free taste of Smash Burger today. I may be a bit biased but it was one of the better burgers I have ever tasted.

I had the Baja burger, my buddy had the Calgary Burger. He was very impressed also. The smash fries were really good, definetely something different, they are toasted with olive oil, rosemary, and garlic. The guacamole on the Baja burger was really good actually, it was a bit spicy but not overly so. The bun was even different then that on the Calgary burger, both very fresh. They were also giving out samples of their shakes (made with Haagen dazs), very good also, and actually drinkable through a straw unlike the cement Peters serves.

Baja Burger.

Stolen from here:

SPICY BAJA
Pepper jack cheese, guacamole, lettuce, tomato, onion, spicy chipotle mayo and fresh jalapeños on a spicy chipotle bun.

Will definitely be going back to try everything else.. lol Especially the fried pickles!

SmashBurger looks yummy, I believe I will go there today and try it out. Mrs. Bigtime has requested I get her one of the Haagen-Daz milkshakes.

Just had Smashburger for lunch, timed it perfectly and only had one couple in line ahead of us. After a few minutes the line was starting to bump up next to the doors.

I had the big Spicy Baja burger with a side of the fried pickles. The patty was very good, cooked with a little pink left in the middle so it was nice and juicy. The toppings were fresh, with excellent crunchy jalapeno slices. The spicy chipotle bun was very nice too, soft but not crumbly.

The fried pickles were a real neat treat, very tangy and the ranch dressing with them was an excellent compliment.

It would be hard to not see the NE location do well, especially on lunches during the work week.

I will definitely be back.

Just got back from Smashburger as well, had a regular Calgary burger, and my wife had a small spicy Baja. My kids shared a kids meal cheeseburger.

We had the fried pickles and the sweet potato smashfries for sides. Both were very good.

There was a lineup to the door, but it went fairly quickly. We were served shake samples while waiting in line. Overall, the food was quite good, we enjoyed it more than Five Guys.

However, points lost for having the toilet paper dispenser WAY too low.

I took a couple of peeks around to see if you were there, but I didn't see you. I don't think you know what I look like though. Got in the door at about 11:40 I think.

You couldn't have missed us, our kids were the only kids in the store!

You are correct, they are made with MacKay's, I was looking at their USA menu which showed it coming from Haagen-Daz.

I bought a butterfinger milkshake for Mrs. Bigtime, it is in the freezer at work and will be brought home for her to have tonight. Will report how it is then.

They are. The menu in store says McKays. The online menu says Haagen Daz, but is wrong.

Too bad. I would have preferred Haagen Daz over McKays (I grew up in Cochrane and never figured out the fasincation with their ice cream, its just a commercial ice cream base from Lucerne and their flavors added in)

Connie and Rob Young have sold Bistro PicNiq and BeatNiq Jazz Club. Rob promises the new owners are committed to taking both places to the next level, what ever that means.
Good for the Youngs for keeping it going for 17 years.
PicNiq is one of my favourite places to dine, and I was last there a couple of Saturdays ago.

I drove by first street tonight and noticed that the new spot in the Lougheed buliding, Black Betty was open. Ubu was open in the space next to it where the windows were papered before. There was quite a few people on the sidewalk in front of both places.

Roast coffee and tea, which had been only selling it bagged beans at Kingsland Farmers' Market, has a full cafe there now, and it's good.
