Hawthorne has a new write-up about Grande Ave. with some new, more detailed pics of Gehry's buildings over at LA TImes.

Hi everyone, I'm not really sure in which thread to ask this question, but I wanted to know if anyone knows of any construction in the Century City area. I pulled in to our condo last night and saw a crane that isn't too tall, right between the main highrise cluster and the Fox Plaza building, and wanted to know what building is going up. Anyone know? Thanks!!

Meruelo's key milestone report

Here's some excerpts:

"We are currently redeveloping the former headquarters of Union Bank, an historic building originally built in 1928, into 92 loft-style units and approximately 11,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space. The property is located at the corner of Hill and Eighth Streets in downtown Los Angeles. While each of the units will be a separate legal condominium unit and are being renovated to a for-sale standard of quality, our business plan calls for them to be initially leased as rental apartment units."

"Southpark Towers will be a two building complex located on most of a city block between Olive Street and Grand Avenue and 11th and 12th Streets in the Southpark section of downtown Los Angeles. The first building of the complex, with the address of 1150 Grand Avenue, will be the larger of the two buildings and will contain three hundred and seventy four high rise residential units in a forty three story high rise tower. A seven story parking garage will be constructed adjacent to the building, with the top floor of the garage dedicated to tenant amenities such as a swimming pool, a tenant health club, common meeting rooms, concierge service and a common media center. The ground floor of this building will contain approximately 30,000 square feet of retail space. While each of the units will be a separate condominium unit and are being constructed to a high for-sale standard of quality, our business plan calls for them to be initially leased as rental apartment units. 1150 Grand Avenue is in the schematic design stages in advance of receiving a building permit. The second building of the complex, with the address of 336 W. 11th Street is in the conceptual design phase. We anticipate receiving our excavation permit in the third quarter of 2007 and commencing excavation work in the fourth quarter of 2007. Kajima Construction has been selected as the general contractor for this project."

The South Park Tower looks really sleek. Hopefully with the new design standards the parking garage will have retail.

I had a chance to stop by Ralphs Fresh Fare today! The store is ALMOST ready! It's so exciting. You can see the aisles pretty much finished and ready to be stocked with food. This place is gonna be PACKED when it opens!

This is the sign that points drivers to the underground parking garage for retail customers.

Simple front view with new "Ralphs Fresh Fare" signs installed.

Isn't this beautiful? Our very first urban supermarket in L.A.!

Coffee Bean on the corner of Hope/9th St. Looks like it's almost done and may open at the same time as Ralphs (possibly next week?).

What'd ever thought this day would finally come?

A peek inside Ralphs (looking very good!)

One more week.........

^An article from this week's LA Downtown News says the Ralph's opening has been delayed until the end of July:

self scan is dumb anyway, most customers have a hard enough time with a checker doing everything

Self-scan is good if you're just running in to grab quick dinner takeout, etc. I think many new lofties, including myself, will be there often for that reason, and I always use the self-scan.

What's dumb is when I've been waiting 5 minutes at a regular register because I have a few too many items however even though the self scan line is empty someone comes with just a couple of items and wants me to let them ahead of me. Uhhh.. NO!

Both CurbedLA and Blogdowntown are reporting that activity has started at Concerto again, with new equipment and digging! Finally, this sucka is moving forward.

^ Wow! Yeah, the news is getting around fast!

I wonder what happened? Did Astani finally get the financing secured? Did he team up with another developer? South Group perhaps?

Anyone with any insight into this, let us know!

LAB, I'll have to put that rumor to bed. Astani did not JV with South Group. Now if they did it with another source, maybe, but South Group was not involved.

Yes, the Map is back. I come out of my shell once in a while. I would use the excuse "I'm working" which we all know is bogus since we all surf this site at work, but the reality is I've been vacationing and just doing other things.

However, give me a forum meet, and I'm there!
