This was said about Oklahoma City as well. Your value to this thread is very low so far.

That has a lot to do with the fact that they're winning. There are teams from all sports in large markets that can't sell out an arena.

Considering how well the city has supported its pro/semi-pro teams in the past, I don't think you can instantly assume that the team wouldn't be supported.

The Utah Jazz barely had a winning season this past season and yet they had one of the highest attendance averages in the NBA.

It was still said before the team stepped on the court.

That sounds like a naysayers comeback.

Your city is poor and your county is bankrupt, among the smallest and slowest growth metros over 1 million people in the country, small business community, and a populace that only cares about college football. You dont have an arena that us up to NBA standards or a stadium worthy of the NFL and you will not be building either in the foreseeable future. Obviously the NHL and MLB are not options for the city, so Im sorry Birmingham major league sports is not for you.

Great news for Birmingham! It's been named an All American City by the National Civic League!

Effort to establish Cahaba trail gains momentum

Quote:

The Cahaba River Society has joined Alabama Innovative Engine and the Nature Conservancy in Alabama to produce the Cahaba Blueway project, a proposed trail to guide outdoor enthusiasts along the river, bring economic development and raise awareness of the importance of the river.

Alabama Engine project director Matt Leavell said the three organizations came together to get themultiyear project started.

“People have been trying to get a trail along the Cahaba for a long time,” Leavell said.

The three organizations sought the help of Doug Barrett, assistant professor of design at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and a team of graphic design majors to produce a logo, website, a mobile app, a book, a video and signage along the river.
..........
Cahaba River Facts

Stretching almost 200 miles within central Alabama, the Cahaba River contains more species of fish per mile than any other river in North America.
The river has been recognized by environmentalists throughout the United States and is considered one of eight Hotspots of Biodiversity in the world.
The river is also the main source of drinking water for the Birmingham Water Works Board, serving one-fifth of the Alabama population.

According to AL.com today's issue the Birmingham Crossplex has been awarded 11 NCAA championship tournaments in swimming & diving, track and field, and wrestling starting in 2015 thrugh 2018 and there maybe more tournament announcements coming. Also the Crossplex has won an award for being the best new indoor track and field facility in the country. The city has hired a firm to come up with commercial development ideas for the 50+ acre site surrounding the Crossplex.

heard a lot of good things about that venue... hate to say it, but langford had some foresight with that one (wasn't that his project?)

can the public take advantage of it, or is it only used for events like this?

location isn't great... i always like large sporting venues to be downtown. glad to hear that surrounding development will follow, though.

Yea, that was one of his. As much as people would like to believe otherwise, Langford did a few good things while he was mayor. While progress has been slow, it seems like Five Points West is starting to show a bit of potential as developers have started to look around the Crossplex for hotel and retail space.

He also had some good ideas, and made a bit of progress, in regards to charging men in the most impoverished communities with taking pride and responsibility for their neighborhoods to reduce crime.

some VERY interesting tweets coming from Fox 6 during the mayor's "state of the city" address today...

"Bell says city is working on replacement for Legion Field, hope to have announcement within 3-6 months"

and

"Bell says [Birmingham's] population will increase by 10,000 over next 5 years"

The first one, I'd be shocked if it actually happened. Even if it does go through, it's not going to be nearly the same size as Legion Field, so the word "replacement" is a bit of a stretch. I wouldn't be torn up with a smaller stadium around 50,000 that could function as a quality arena with around 25,000.

The comment about population isn't completely unreasonable, but 10,000 seems to be pushing it. If I'm not mistaken, the city's population increased oh so slightly in the past couple of years.

Replacement sounds more grand then the small mini dome proposal I heard about that would only seat about 40k. But they have two events in The Classic and the Compass Bowl that exceed that. I am hoping they build at least a 75k stadium with the option to go up to 90 or 100. They should be aggressive and go after a playoff game, an iron bowl game and maybe even a championship either SEC or NCAA. This is the football capital of the south after all.

There was an article about the Mayor's state of the City address in the Birmingham Business Journal and one of the question was regarding Legion Field. The Mayor made it sound like he was thinking more about refurbishing Legion Field than replacing it. I hope that is not the case but that is what it sounded like me. But then we will have to wait the 3 to 6 months to see just what it is he has planned.
