I was in Austin on Sunday and Monday for the first time in 15 years. The scale of downtown now vs what it was then is nothing short of staggering. Must be so much fun watching all those projects going up. Maybe I’ll get around to posting some pix...

A Dallas-based developer expects to break ground on a roughly 45-story apartment tower overlooking Lady Bird Lake by early 2019. It’s one of two apartment high-rises Genesis Real Estate Group has proposed for the Villas on Town Lake condo site near the Rainey Street Historic District.

The company submitted a site plan application to the city earlier this month and it expects to break ground on construction in about nine or 10 months.

Originally the Austin American-Statesman reported the tower would be roughly 40 stories high. This week though Genesis President Gordon Ip said it will go even higher, at 45 stories or even as many as 50 stories.

It's two towers. The site plan, which has already been filed, lists it as two 55-story towers - one is 695 feet, the other is 595 feet. The site plan listed them as a residential tower and a hotel/residential tower.

Not expecting too much in regard to decent architecture from the developers of The Travis. It's too bad; especially since the two towers will be so prominent in the skyline.

Having said that...there are at least four, new, ~600+ towers being proposed for CBD Austin. Now that is something to celebrate.

I would also assume that at some point something big will replace the post office since it covers a whole block and isn't affected by a CVC. It's also across the street (to the south) from the 600 Guadalupe site.

Over a decade ago Novare had planned a tower for that block that was mentioned to be around 600 feet.

I still can't get over how much the skyline has changed, can anyone post a side by side from like 2000 and a recent photo now? That would be awesome to see.

In this photo, you can see the old Austin City Hall at the head of the South First Street Bridge, but at that time that building housed a lumber company. That whole area is Austin's warehouse district. Back then it was legit light industrial, but today it's mostly bars and restaurants, surrounded by office towers and residential buildings. Austin City Hall at that time was a few blocks north of there. The Capitol building was still the tallest building in Austin at the time this was taken, and it would remain Austin's tallest until 1974. Today there are 34 buildings that are taller than the Capitol that either complete or under construction, and there are at least 20 more planned that will be taller than the Capitol. The UT Tower was also the only high rise north of the Capitol back then.

This photo from 1997 shows the Palmer Auditorium before it was transformed into the Long Center. That's the South First Street Bridge. The small yellow building at the head of the bridge is Austin City Hall. To the left you can see the Tom Green Water Treatment Plant. That whole area now is covered with towers. The old city hall was demolished and replaced with a new one in 2004. The Green Water Treatment Plant was demolished and more than 2 1/2 million square feet of office space, hotel and residential replaced it.

This photo also shows the construction of what would become only Austin's third 300 footer. The Dobie Center, a private dorm, was under construction here, seen on the right. You can also see the first of the big state office buildings going up in the Capitol Complex.

Those parking lots at the Palmer Auditorium were awful. That area now is effectively a park. The parking garage wrapped around the Palmer Auditorium replacing them, and the Palmer Auditorium was remodeled into the Long Center. I sort of miss the turtle shell though.

Unfortunately, the 1999 photo cuts off the taller buildings of the time. Still, nothing like today.
