Back 2 Basics: What is your absolute favorite city in the world, and why?

Ok - so choose a city, explain why it's your favorite, and then show a picture that captures as best as possible the essence of why you love it.

For me, it's London.

I simply love how cosmopolitan, ethnically diverse, historic and walkable the city is. To me, it feels like the center of the world, where exciting things are always happening. I love the double decker red buses. The quaint parks, the neon billboards of Piccadilly Circus. I'm obsessed (and wish I could afford to live in) with the residential back streets of central London and all the row homes that line them. Love the prevalence of old brick, the foggy weather, the endless winding alleys to get lost in.

Can we instead have a thread to discuss our absolute favorite bathroom in the world, and why? (with pictures)

Hard to say. NY is great but tolerable weather days are rare but I appreciate that it still has a diverse population, transit you do not have to plan your day around, and politically reasonable. SF is too liberal that when I lived there it almost felt stagnant.

it gets weird with american cities, my answers are always like early 00s portland or something like that. i haven't really found a favorite CITY in the WORLD, yet, but it will probably be within the mediterranean world, or close, judging from my experience in other european cities. i've been oh so close to lyon, i've always imagined that i would like it. or perhaps parts of rome, or bologna...these places resonate with me. perhaps someplace smaller, closer to the geology of the mediterranean basin.

back to the new world, i've always loved new orleans but doubtful i could ever say that a north american city was my favorite in the WORLD. in my youth, perhaps it was new orleans.

Favourite City: Tokyo
Why: so many people, so much stuff. So much of everything and great trains to get you everywhere, and when you go to the special places like Meiji Shrine the city just completely disappears, it is magical

Barcelona!

The stunning architecture, low cost of living, access to the coast, amazing food, fantastic neighborhoods and good transit system make for what I consider the perfect city...I plan on spending at least a few of my retirement years there.

I can't even choose a favorite in the U.S., let alone the world.

What would make this fun is if people aren't allowed to choose a city where they have lived for more than a year.

I've had moments in a number of cities where you feel that epiphany of "holy shit this is the greatest place on Earth." London, New York, Barcelona, Munich all fit the bill. It's different when you're traveling with friends, carefree and drinking copious amounts.

If I had to pick one that fits best for me to actually live in it's probably New York. I'm there for work on a bi-monthly basis now and it never really gets old. I debated moving there when a job opportunity came up but never pulled the trigger. Felt like as a junior in finance I wouldn't even get the chance to really enjoy the city with the amount of work. My life has pretty deep roots in Toronto at this point and if I thought owning something here was tough...

Tokyo by far. The insane train system, incredibly nice people, low crime rate, quiet side streets with stores...everything.

Now, favorite city I could actually see myself living in for the rest of my life? London. Pleasant comes to mind.

toronto. its flat, next to a lake, modern, worldly and decrepitly great lakes at the same time. its the first big city i ever skateboarded in where the cops didnt care, you could stay out late with getting harrassed or robbed, and was only 4 hours away from my house growing up. my parents both came from chicago and while i always loved going back to see relatives, growing up in michigan, toronto was always my go to big city destination. i LOOOOOOVE toronto....really....

Favorite that I've been to: Tokyo. I spent 10 days just exploring Tokyo (with 1 day trip down to Kamakura) and I feel like I wasn't even able to scratch the surface.

Kind of cool to think there is a part of the US where people get their big city fix in Canada. Was it common for people you know to head to Toronto for fun? Seems like such an un-American thing to do.
