Yes; the cancer center already has funding in place. I believe construction begins in Nov./Dec. on the cancer center.

From the dirt lot east of the building (other side of 7th)

It really looks impressive in person, especially when you're driving north on 7th. Now something needs to go up on the empty lot.

Rationale:

YMCA is currently crowded with serving two communities with same peak time interest
Creates community and allows for more student meeting places.
FWIW, while walking to my car through the adjacent (South) parking lot to the YMCA, I noticed a bunch of new utility markings. Also, I noticed what looked like bore locations for some geotechnical/soils surveys. Maybe this is the start to design?

Just viewed ABOR report no plan given yet. They did mention though that SRC for West and Poly will break ground in October and be complete by December 2012.

Quote:
YMCA acquired an additional 14,196 square feet of land in two parcels to the
south of their Lincoln Family Downtown YMCA facility at 350 North 1st Avenue,
Phoenix, AZ for $1,350,000.

The proposed property purchase consists of two parcels, on either side of the
existing YMCA. This acquisition permits the construction of a new recreation and wellness building to the south of the YMCA and enhanced entry and pedestrian access to the north. The total acquisition is approximately 27,700 sq. ft., as illustrated in Exhibit B.

Cool, but like I said, maybe it is some geotechnical analysis for design, not construction.

Happening on the BioMed land north of Fillmore: Valley of the Sunflowers

Developing dirt lots downtown, especially on those lots owned by the city, is a challenge for multiple reasons: funding, vision, planning, and politics. For the neighborhood to see development on this vacant land, a magic word must be evoked: temporary.

With this in mind Valley of the Sunflowers was developed. The project on a vacant parcel between 5th and 6th Streets and Garfield and McKinley Streets will bring utility, beauty, and creative use to an abandoned lot in the heart of Roosevelt-if only temporarily.

Sean, will the project be able to plant sunflowers in the dirt planter strips between the sidewalks & the streets? Or just in the interior portion of the lot bounded by sidewalks? (as the rendering shows)

Either way its an amazing project, thanks for taking the lead on it. I wish I was back in Phx to chip in (and will be contributing to the kickstarter when I can).

Thanks, Will
I think they'll just be in the interior portion. It'll keep us from having to run drip tape across the sidewalk and will simplify the planting/harvesting process.

Hasn't this existed in other cities for quite some time, known as "flower-bombing" ? ? ?

In other cities, this was done as a form of vigilante beautification.

Either way, we'll see how it looks. . . sunflowers tend to turn raggedy after the main bloom (single bloomers anyhow)

Unfortunately, flower bombing doesn't work here because we don't get any rain.
We're harvesting each season for the seeds and replanting, so each planting is a single bloom. Did that make sense? (note: I'm not the horticulturist.)

I've been going to the DT YMCA since before asu opened downtown. I've never seen it busier than right now. There seem to be way more students there now than in years past. Btw, the outdoor pool idea is stupid, unless it's a rooftop pool.

Thanks for the update megabass.

^ A pool OUTSIDE? The horror...how is that stupid? Most pools I've been to are outside and a few YMCA's across town have a shade structure over the entire pool area. So that may happen.
