I don't know about that... The W Downtown isn't exactly doing well.

I was never quite sure how I felt about the design for Museum Place but now that its dead, I suddenly really like it.

Is that building supposed to be noteworthy?

To some people, most anything NOT Atlanta is noteworthy.

I'm just a casual fan of good architecture, but I know what I like, and yes David Chipperfield does some really fine work. I thought John Wieland made an excellent choice in going with him. Unfortunately, One Museum Place isn't going to happen and we'll not be able to see any of Chipperfield's work here. That's all. There are other primo architects who have graced Atlanta with their work. One example is just across the street from the former Wieland site.

The new proposal is dog shit. It looks like an Equifax call center in Norcross. Glad it's never being built.

What eventually gets built there is key to the entire district, IMHO.

Well how do people know, the man just went in the newspaper and said he had the money all lined up in Europe?

Not quite. Design Reese is supposed to be designing to new proposal. The only thing that remains from the original plan is the John Wieland art Museum.

Developer plans $350M luxury hotel near High Museum

I seriously doubt that is the real design.

For one thing, there is a transitional height plane behind the site that requires step backs from Ansley Park. The buidling at right clearly does not provide this, and there is no way in hell that the Ansley Park neighborhood would support a variance to the requirement for anything that BANAL.

I assumed that was the case. It states in the ABC article that Design Reese is designing the hotel.

I wouldn't be surprised if 10 years down the road people look back at the slanty little wings and do-flotchies and whatnot they are sticking on roofs these days and say, "Man, what were they thinking," then in 75 years they will look back and say "Those were the golden years"?

This is from the New Broad Street website concerning the GM Doraville project.

Quote:
The New Broad Street Companies announced on January 28, 2010 a contract agreement with General Motors LLC to purchase and redevelop GM’s former assembly plant in Doraville, Georgia. New Broad Street president David Pace said he believes that this is the best urban infill site in the country for a large transit-oriented development. New Broad Street will incorporate environmental remediation of the former industrial site with best practices for sustainable development.

Closing is anticipated for summer 2010, at which time initial development concepts and timing details will be disclosed.

Seems like 10 years behind the curve.

So then what is the current trend in mixed-use development? This seems right on the money to me.

It looks like Atlantic Station 2.0, but at least this one is immediately adjacent to a transit station. It would be a great development if they can fully integrate it with the Doraville station as well as any "revive 285" transit that may come into play.
Also, this will give a good "anchor" to the NE MARTA line. It's a really good transit planning strategy. Usually by the time a train arrives in Doraville, the crowds have thinned out considerably. Compare that to southbound trains, which keep a heavy ridership throughout the route because of the airport. This "anchoring" helps to ensure even ridership across the line, making MARTA more efficient on a per-mile basis.
