Interesting discussion. Wether we like to admit or not, everyone has some sort of accent. Voice inflection also depends on who you live with, where you live, amount of time, etc. My brother lives in Atlanta. (Lawrenceville, to be exact....and his wife is from Alabama). He has a Southern accent, no doubt. My friend in GA thinks he dosen't- and when my brother visited me in New York State, where I lived previously, he thought I sounded New Yorkish. Here in Newfoundland, people say I sound like i'm from Ontario. Guess what? I lived in all three places. I think exposure, over time may have some effect on neutralizing an accent. All accents are pretty distinctive...as for an Atlanta accent, it's there, and varied. Just like Long Island, Brooklyn, Bronx and Northern NJ all have different accents, there is no "set" accent. Myself, I start to hear the southern accent creep in around Laurel, MD. Being away from GA for a long time now, I'll probaly notice it more, as I'm away from it. Here in Newfoundland, there are at least 300 different dialects. Some sound Irish, otheres are downright incomprehensible! But for the most part, I can understand the Newfoundland accent with ease now.
