Boston - short afternoons

As I sit here lamenting the short winter days that are upon us, I figured I'd post a little Boston winter gloom set. This includes some night photos, which are easy to get now that night starts at like 4pm.

This is Newbury Street back in September, at a normal evening hour.

I want to say the street signs here say Kilby Square, but all references seem to label it Liberty Square.

Now a quick trip to Roslindale, one of the southern neighborhoods in Boston. Rozzie, like all these outlying sections of the city, was annexed during the 19th century and kind of feels like its own town.

Still looking autumnal.

This is in Harvard's Arnold Arboretum, which is in the Roslindale/Jamaica Plain area (which is not near Harvard, by the way).

Back downtown, to Winthrop Square.

This is in the Theater District part of downtown, on Tremont Street just south of the Boston Common.

Back Bay Station (bus/subway/commuter rail/Amtrak) with the Pru behind.

One of the less pedestrian-friendly intersections in the downtown/Back Bay vicinity.

Looking down Columbus Ave into the South End. I don't remember the exact story of this building and don't feel like looking it up right now.

Tremont Street again

On the edge of Chinatown, I guess.

Produce stand in Downtown Crossing, which is the branding applied to the longtime shopping district centered on Washington and Winter/Summer Streets.

Said intersection. Lots of crowds and activity here during normal hours, but it doesn't last long into the night.

Park Street Church

This woman is a fixture at the Park Street subway station.

Now Copley Square

This isn't a night farmers market; it just gets dark super early.

Dartmouth Street in the Back Bay/South End border zone

This again.

Now over to East Boston, specifically Orient Heights. The views here kind of got Photoshopped all to hell in my attempt to restore contrast and what-not, but I'm too lazy to go back and try again.

Eastie in the foreground, bridge in the middle, Cambridge in the background.

This is the vantage point.

Walking back toward the main part of East Boston, a view to downtown.

Day Square

Looking from Maverick Square toward Central Square. East Boston around here is one of the most densely populated parts of the city and seems very active, despite being relatively inaccessible. Your options for getting downtown and beyond are subway (very convenient, though), toll highway tunnels, or a very circuitous route.

Maverick Square

Back in a fancy part of town, Beacon Hill.

Over to my side of the river in Cambridge. This is a defunct block in my neighborhood.

And finally, this liquor store with its awesome lighted sign. Based on photos from the 50s or so, I think flashy signs like this used to be pretty common on this stretch of Mass. Ave.

Thanks for looking!

Great photos. One the nation's greatest cities, and definitely one of my favorites. The first time I was there, I saw some views that reminded me of London (the dark red brick and chimneys all around). I love that place.

Pitch dark by 4pm. Gotta love it

First Rozzie Square/Village sighting on this forum, at least since I've been here!

Every time I go to JP (granted, this is only two or three times total) I never manage to take any pictures, except one at Hyde Square once. I must fix this pattern.

"Boston" and "charm" are synonyms.

Boston doesn't have to try. It's a natural.

Pic #2, I've always known that as Kilby Sq.

My sister used to work in that building about 10 years ago and I'd meet her for lunch sometimes we'd walk to Quincy Market.

Great tour. I fully support the showcasing of lesser-seen Boston 'hoods. Roslindale is amazing - I'd never guess it was part of the city by the photos. I was also unaware of that overlook in East Boston.

The fortresslike building in Park Square was originally an armory, then it was the UMass Boston library and is now a convention site for a hotel across the street.

the old fortress looking building you didnt want to look up with the ribbon around was an old armory type and called The Castle is now a Smith and Wollensky steakhouse. someone mentioned the spot overlooking eastie towards the skyline , that is the Madonna shrine in the Orient Heights section of East Boston. i believe you mentioned "in the background is Cambridge but it is actually Charlestown (you can see Bunker Hill Monument sticking up) and beyond that is The People's Republic of Cambridge Great stuff by the way!!!

That's not the Bunker Hill Monument; that's part of the bridge. I think a tiny bit of the Charlestown waterfront is in that view but otherwise Charlestown is all out of frame to the right. Anyway, thanks for the names on those things I was too lazy to remember or look up!

And thanks all for dropping by!
