A couple of those trees look as if they've had a lot of grief, probably due to wind. I get a slight "the beach is just over the next hill" vibe.

This may be Dana Point. They had a lantern theme with street lights designed after lanterns and also street names like 'Street of the Golden Lantern'. I haven't been able to narrow this photo to a particular spot, though.

Crystal

Of course none of this helps pinpoint the exact location of the 'mystery' photograph.

I wonder if, in the 1950's-60's, Robinson's sponsored modern sculptural art at their new stores. I grew up near the Robinson's at the old incarnation of Anaheim Plaza and it had a 30-foot fountain outside I could best describe as an arthritic noble pine. In hindsight, it was hideous, but it one hell of a cool racket when the fountain was turned on.

Interesting sidewalk too.....looks like pavers. Can't think of any place offhand that had walks like that. The landscape does remind me a bit of Pacific Palisades, but I got nothing concrete (except the pavers).

It is amazing how much the red sandstone framing of the plaque has deteriorated between then and now. That sandstone was saved from the "red sandstone courthouse" from 1891. The left side of that edging is now badly deteriorated to the point where the Greek Key is hardly visible in spots.

The general look of the streets is also reminiscent of the Surfridge area, west of the runways at LAX, which has been discussed here on NLA. I haven't seen anything about the Surfridge pavers though.

Hi ER and Prophet, First-time poster, long-time follower here. Thought I'd chime is as I'm fairly certain that the Ford Victoria photo is in the 'pier bowl' area of San Clemente (just a little further south than Dana Point).

Though the neighborhood is much more developed these days, the curve and slope of that street are the same - giving me a sort of 'uncanny valley' response as those streets are imprinted in my childhood memories. I'm too young to have ever seen those light poles, but a quick look on the San Clemente historical society website shows identical lights up on El Camino Real/old PCH.

The real tip-off is the sidewalk - San Clemente is the only city I know of that paved their sidewalks in rectangular terracotta tiles, which the image shows if you look closely.

The CA coastal records project shows a less developed area in 1972. I believe the tree we see on the corner is the one across the street from the middle of the large parking lot in the 1972 aerial.

Today's Julius Shulman post shows what could have happened to the Farmers Market. It's "Job 6242: Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum, Farmers Market Development Study - model, 1984". I'm posting all three of the color images, there are also 14 black & white ones from different angles.



It looks like CBS Television City was due to get a new southern entrance. The building on the right had a rooftop pool and tennis courts.
