'mystery' location.

"Original Negative Los Angeles 1955 Ford Victoria"

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Orig-photo-n...IAAOSwTuJYpQUy

That unique 'lantern' style street light is a pretty good clue. If I remember correctly we visited an area with similar street lights on NLA.

A couple of those trees look as if they've had a lot of grief, probably due to wind. I get a slight "the beach is just over the next hill" vibe.

Late to the party?

Similar views from the top of Angel's Flight, circa 1906. Not from the usual source, but they may be from negatives/positives previously seen on NLA.

Slight correction, MARY POPPINS was nominated for 13 Academy Awards.

Only three films have been nominated for 14: All About Eve, Titanic and La La Land.

Or even "Just downhill to the left." It looks like that road could be on a bluff above the beach.

This may be Dana Point. They had a lantern theme with street lights designed after lanterns and also street names like 'Street of the Golden Lantern'. I haven't been able to narrow this photo to a particular spot, though.

publicity brochure

Thanks ProphetM, that's the area I was vaguely remembering but I couldn't recall the name.

Here's my first post on the Dana Point 'Lantern' street lights.
http://www.skyscraperpage.com/forum/...ostcount=31384

And a follow up by tovangar2
http://www.skyscraperpage.com/forum/...ostcount=31396

The lanterns were of various colors.

Green
Blue
Ruby
Amber
Violet
Golden
Silver
Copper
Crystal

Of course none of this helps pinpoint the exact location of the 'mystery' photograph.

update: 11:02 PM

I just looked at the lantern in the mystery pic again, and I see it isn't a 100% match.

Back to square one?

I wonder if, in the 1950's-60's, Robinson's sponsored modern sculptural art at their new stores. I grew up near the Robinson's at the old incarnation of Anaheim Plaza and it had a 30-foot fountain outside I could best describe as an arthritic noble pine. In hindsight, it was hideous, but it one hell of a cool racket when the fountain was turned on.

I am intrigued VA........Pasadena/SPas/San Marino are all in my region of special interest. Care to elaborate?

Interesting sidewalk too.....looks like pavers. Can't think of any place offhand that had walks like that. The landscape does remind me a bit of Pacific Palisades, but I got nothing concrete (except the pavers).

An arthritic noble pine. lol

I believe this is the fountain you're talking about, right Mstimc?

It's still there, hidden behind a Rubio's.

google

Luckily, the google-mobile took a spin through the back parking lot.

Alas, it no longer functions as a fountain , and that's a darn shame.

Young couple about to be married at the Los Angeles County Courthouse [c.1970s]

I don't see a wedding band on the man's finger, so I believe this was taken before the ceremony.

It is amazing how much the red sandstone framing of the plaque has deteriorated between then and now. That sandstone was saved from the "red sandstone courthouse" from 1891. The left side of that edging is now badly deteriorated to the point where the Greek Key is hardly visible in spots.

The general look of the streets is also reminiscent of the Surfridge area, west of the runways at LAX, which has been discussed here on NLA. I haven't seen anything about the Surfridge pavers though.

Here's a surviving streetlight that is interesting but not a match

Hotel Californian

An early (1927) neon sign gets re-lit today at its original site, 1901 W 6th, next door to the Barbizon.

Hi ER and Prophet, First-time poster, long-time follower here. Thought I'd chime is as I'm fairly certain that the Ford Victoria photo is in the 'pier bowl' area of San Clemente (just a little further south than Dana Point).

GSV link:

https://www.google.com/maps/@33.4209...8i6656!6m1!1e1

Though the neighborhood is much more developed these days, the curve and slope of that street are the same - giving me a sort of 'uncanny valley' response as those streets are imprinted in my childhood memories. I'm too young to have ever seen those light poles, but a quick look on the San Clemente historical society website shows identical lights up on El Camino Real/old PCH.

Link: http://sanclementehistoricalsociety....03/cover_1.jpg

The real tip-off is the sidewalk - San Clemente is the only city I know of that paved their sidewalks in rectangular terracotta tiles, which the image shows if you look closely.

The CA coastal records project shows a less developed area in 1972. I believe the tree we see on the corner is the one across the street from the middle of the large parking lot in the 1972 aerial.

GW showed us the Hotel Californian sign in its rusty and graffitied state back in 2013 - see here. Also from that post, a 1926 exterior view of the hotel (just before the neon).

Thanks to e_r for the pictures of the old Belmont Theater. I didn't have a chance to research the building's history. Also, thanks to odinthor for your memories of Ben-Hur at the Belmont.

Today's Julius Shulman post shows what could have happened to the Farmers Market. It's "Job 6242: Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum, Farmers Market Development Study - model, 1984". I'm posting all three of the color images, there are also 14 black & white ones from different angles.

It looks like CBS Television City was due to get a new southern entrance. The building on the right had a rooftop pool and tennis courts.

I'll finish with this angled view.

All from Getty Research Institute

I'm sure we're all familiar with how the site looks today, but here's a reminder.
