Quebec City's (CMA: 765 706) homicide rate averaged 0.71/100 000 from 2000 to 2009 (0.8 in 2010). We have two homicides so far this year.

Man found beaten on gottingen st. died from injuries
considering the amount of gunfire in Halifax recently Im surprised the latest homicide isnt a shooting .

I've heard that this was actually a case of extreme homophobia gone too far. Im hoping theres more to it than that.

Escaped psychiatric hospital patient. "Escaped" in the sense that after they let him out for a bit he happened to not return. Gee, who could have seen that coming!

I've never understood how unescorted leaves from a psychiatric hospital are allowed. If someone is in there, and is known to have violent and unpredictable behavior, how can they be allowed to walk around among the population without supervision? It's just asking for trouble.

I'm not sure how much of this is NS and how much of it is true across the country, but it's not unheard of for serious crimes to be committed by repeat offenders who, usually because of age or mental illness, get a lot of leniency. Another case from a few years ago was Archie Billard, who hit and killed somebody while on a joy ride when he was 16. He was later released then assaulted somebody.

There's a fear of "institutionalizing" people and making them worse by keeping them in prison, but a certain number of people are just not safe to be out in public. Sometimes it might be hard to identify them, but other times it seems like the legal system is just messed up and misses violent criminals.

In Ontario, it was primarily because the government at the time didn't want to pay for them anymore. Quite a few mentally ill people who were discharged from the Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital due to the Harris cuts have gone missing, died, or committed crimes. One man from that hospital hijacked a Greyhound bus and rolled it over, killing an elderly woman. Another went into an old folks home about 7 years ago and ripped the arm off a resident. But hey, our income taxes we slightly lower for a brief period of time!! Hooray!!

The entire facility is closing in a couple years, to be replaced by a much smaller treatment centre downtown.

Basically it seems like this country simply doesn't know how to deal with criminally insane people.

QC has a higher homicide rate than Montreal right now.

^Not anymore as a man was found in a trunk of an abandoned car in the West-Island. We have 7 now.

Murder in Brossard on the weekend. A man known to police was shot ten times inside a parking garage. He was not from Quebec apparently.

Yesterday was a busy day in Winnipeg. In a Daniel Mcintyre neighbourhood a woman was found dead at approximately 12:30. Her death is being considered suspicious as neighbours claim a domestic dispute has occurred. At 5:40 a man committed a murder suicide, by killing his wife, fleeing and then forcing a head on collision on a highway south of the city. That is Winnipeg's second murder-suiside of the year. That brings this years homicide count to 15.

Number 5 in Halifax was just ruled a homicide from April, stabbing death was an elderly woman a 41 year old man is in custody
