^They've had at least a couple of residential towers in the 400 foot range.

I have never been to Milwaukee, but based on the pictures this is a very nice project! I also like the waterfront, although it looks eerily quiet.

i suppose that all depends on how one defines the word "anything". milwaukee is certainly not toronto or new york, but for a medium-sized midwest city, it's done alright with highrise construction over the past decade:

1. University Club Tower --- 446'/35 floors - 2007
2. Kilbourn Tower ---------- 385'/33 floors - 2005
3. The Moderne ------------ 348'/30 floors - 2012

4. The Breakwater ---------- 260'/21 floors - 2009
5. St. John's on the Lake ---- 250'/21 floors - 2012
6. Cathedral Place ---------- 243'/18 floors - 2004
7. Park Lafayette north ----- 221'/20 floors - 2009
8. Park Lafayette south ----- 221'/20 floors - 2009

along with a half dozen or so lesser high-rises.

the bolded high-rises above are currently among milwaukee's 10 tallest buildings.

Shoring Up
Two developers look to build on Milwaukee's lakefront.

September 12, 2012
Chris Bentley

Quote:
To those who have braved at least one winter in the upper Midwest the prospect of “year-round vibrancy” on Milwaukee’s blustery lakefront might raise an eyebrow. But that’s exactly what developer Rick Barrett hopes his mixed-use tower near the Cream City’s Lake Michigan waterfront will make possible.

The Couture will be a 44-story, $125 million hotel and residential tower at the eastern-most plot of downtown Milwaukee’s East Michigan Street. Barrett won a bid to redevelop the downtown transit center, whose proximity to the Milwaukee Art Museum and lakefront festival grounds have led some to call it one of the most valuable properties in Wisconsin.

Once viewed as potential competition for the Couture, plans for another nearby development have instead coalesced with that project into a cause for optimism along an underused corridor of Milwaukee’s lakefront area. At 18 stories the comparatively squat 833 East complements the Couture in massing, as well as in the economic impact projected by its developers. If the $100 million 833 East hits its 2015 opening target it will be the first new office tower downtown since 2004.

Fourth-floor skywalk connections could link the Couture to 833 East and to the existing U.S. Bank Galleria, including the restaurants therein. U.S. Bank is the largest office high-rise in the state. It will connect one million square feet of office space to 833 East and, in turn, to the pedestrian environment that its developer, Mark Irgens, hopes the project will help foster.

The 833 East office building.

DNR ruling clears lakefront site for high-rise project
By Paul Gores of the Journal Sentinel Updated: 2:50 p.m.

The site of a proposed $125 million lakefront high-rise project isn't on a filled lake bed and can be redeveloped, officials said Friday.

The state Department of Natural Resources said its research shows the parcel of land, on which Milwaukee County's Downtown Transit Center now sits, does not fall under the state's public trust doctrine. The doctrine protects former lake beds from development.

The ruling clears a hurdle for construction of the 44-story Couture, a project that would include a 180-room hotel, 179 apartments and parking for 775 vehicles.

How is it only 507ft, when the renderings show it's clearly taller than the US Bank Center, which is 601ft?

^ Well in most of those it's just the angle of the rendering that makes it seem that way. The one that is more of a side to side shot does make it look that way, wouldn't put much stock in it though, just renderings. 507ft would make it third highest in Milwaukee.

It's just the angle. Residential buildings tend to pack in the floors, too. I'm even surprised it's 507 feet. Austin's 360 Condominiums is 44 floors also and is just 473 to the roof.

Looks nice, Milwaukee has actually been pretty active lately. Not sure many cities have had 3 of their 10 tallest buildings completed since 2005. Also some interesting NW Mutual news leaking out that may lead to a new office tower downtown.

With all the amazing old stately buildings, Milwaukee will look even more amazing from the street level with these talls popping up.

glad to see some activity on this.

this project is a really nice addition to the skyline.

i'd love to see milwaukee get a new tallest more centrally located in the skyline, so i'm good with this being just a bit shorter than the u.s. bank building.

with the news that NWM's tower proposal is 550' tall, if that project and the Couture both go through, milwaukee could see two buildings over 500' under construction at the same time in a couple years, doubling the number of existing 500+ footers in milwaukee. that's some serious potential skyline change.

Downtown Transit Center sale clears title issues; Couture work may begin in early 2015
Sean Ryan
The Business Journal

Developer Rick Barrett said he has cleared legal issues surrounding his purchase of the Downtown Transit Center, marking a significant step forward for the 44-story Couture development.

Barrett said he plans to start construction in the first quarter of 2015 on the $160 million apartment and hotel tower on the site of the Downtown Transit Center at East Michigan Street on the downtown lakefront. Barrett’s comments came during The Business Journal’s Business of Growing Milwaukee event held Sept. 13.

The Couture would have 261 market-rate apartments, 153 rooms in a high-end hotel and 40,000 square feet of retail space.

That's good news. I just spent all of August in Milwaukee and was really surprised at how much the city had to offer.
