This is a similar to a circle line I thought about 5 years ago much like the Yamanote Line in Tokyo area... which would start downtown at around Burrard Station, run underground down Hastings (possible spur to Phibbs Exchange) to Willingdon, surface up and run elevated on Willingdon past Brentwood, BCIT, through a tunnel again, up to around Metrotown, run parallel to the Expo Line elevated and then down Kingsway, make a turn onto 41st Ave all the way to Arbutus where it would join a possible Arbutus line, snake its way down to the Burrard st Bridge where it'll run underneath on the proposed lower deck, and then underground back to Burrard Station. There would be full clockwise and counterclockwise service. The ultimate Arbutus line would see service from Marine Drive Station to Phibbs Exchange. The rush hour frequency of each line would be 5 minutes with combined frequency between Kerrisdale and PNE of 2.5 minutes.

One could dream eh?

If they called it an extension of the 'NDP' M-Line, they can't take credit for doing it.

If they call it an extension, they're deciding on the technology before a study confirms suspicions, therefore biasing the study to begin with.

( guess where i live )
It would likely be underground along hastings anyhow, unless it was built along the alleyways in the back of the street.

I doubt it would get all the way to Willingdon, however. It would probably stop at Boundary as Phase I.

What about having a split in the line? One going up to the North Shore and one going down to Metro and etc.

Not sure how many North Surrey residents there are here, but as a long-time lurker I registered to make this comment/observation: Anything at-grade would result in a ridiculous amount of evictions and demolitions in any direction from King George. Unless of course you cut through that wonderfully clear park but then you have a whole other group on your back.

If it's Skytrain, it would no doubt extend from VCC-Clark as it's already in place. I seem to remember awhile back there were some local residents along the blocks west of Commercial that were not to cheerful about the prospect of Skytrain through their neighborhood...

That's not a seabus - that's the "Barnet people mover project" - i.e. hydrofoils - that was nixed when the Socreds lost the election - the NDP subsequently initiated the Westcoast Express (as very high track time rates). You can see it as a dotted line on the map on that brochure.

I'm really glad you guys brought up the idea of extending the expo/millenium line east from waterfront station down hastings. I guess it's a low priority area at this point, but isn't it a no brainer? wouldn't it make sense to have stations in chinatown and DTES and off into burnaby? That area has a lot of density as it is, and downtown will surely grow that way and many projects will start when the recession ends and when the DTES is de-scuzified.

Yeah I always thought such a line would take pressure of the expo line, especially at Broadway where passengers transfer of the Milenium line. Even passengers from around Metro town would only waste less than 5-10 to take the less congested route downtown. There is also tons of redevelopment potential along the route, BCIT has huge potential on all the unused land, one of the main employment hubs in the region in the area and a hospital in the area, Brentwood will only grow more, tons of potential along Hastings, Kootney loop area can desify, then you have the PNE and even some sections along Victoria drive could be rezoned for high density between Hastings and Venables, and obviously east of downtown theres tons and tons of potential...I also always had a bit of a wish to use the fill to create a new port terminal closer to second narrows bridge and move the Centrum part of the port over there and finance it by selling and redeveloping the land. It can then connect with the expo line/hastings extension. Based on what the city fetched from the Olympic village im sure the Port could pay for their move and still make a profit on top, as a side benefit they can get move some of their operations further away from downtown which im sure they would love, the city also wins. I could see them pumping in over 50,000 people on to prime waterfront land at the base of Main st, and more land could be reclaimed and a nice extensive waterfront park created to go along with it.

omg.....that's one of my dreams, only that the Port would actually relocate to expanded facilities at Deltaport where there's no city traffic and is near the border with well connected roads including the SFPR.

I think this all calls for a new fantasy rapid transit map... but I think we've all gone a bit off topic here. Come on folks, Surrey's gotta be worth talking about.

Getting skytrain to Guildford and Fleetwood is a great idea... but there are surely faster, less expensive ways to get an extension to Langley. At grade trains running in excess of 100km/h to quickly get them from Langley to Surrey. Skytrain is a bit too slow for the task. I welcome the study because they'll have be able to properly identify the best way to go at this... hopefully.

No kidding, how about rapid transit where the people are, not where they might be in the future.

I think this extension makes sense, but beyond that it should be LRT out to Langley and maybe another line down to White Rock.

I know that many people here in Surrey are for LRT rather than Skytrain, including Diane Watts. For the same money as skytrain, I'm sure that LRT could be built two to three times as far.

I would love to see one line from King George Station down King George Highway through Newton right into South Surrey. The second one Would be from Surrey Central, down 104th Avenue, through Guildford, run along Highway 1 to 200th, then down to Willowbrook.

i doubt that a train running that fast between Surrey and Langley with stops between is a feasible idea.

Northwest up the Hydro ROW wouldn't mean evictions.

Yeah but...there's nothing there. Wouldn't running an at-grade line through that area totally defeat the benefits that it would otherwise give?

I agree. The/A study should identify routes in Surrey, Langley, and North Delta, while looking at Guildford and Fleetwood in detail as well.

Anyway, I'm still going with this (I'm surprised with how many views it's gotten)

agreed! and with the necessity for skytrain technology, bombardier's probably going to be pushing it that way too. no competitive tender process = no likely further privatization of the system.

You can still privatize the design, construction, financing and maintenance of a line extension - like Docklands has done in London. Essentially, the P3 partner designs, constructs, maintains and guarantees available track time (i.e. maintain to a standard) in exchange for payment - they just aren't involved the operation of the vehicles.
