I think anyone who actually has an emotional stake in the naming of this tower should oppose naming it something as obviously propagandistic as The Freedom Tower. It's a ridiculous name coined by a politician hopping on board with the other pols in trying to increase popularity in the wake of a national disaster.

1 World Trade Center is a classy and professional sounding name as well as an actual address.

I loathe the name "freedom tower". sounds like a dubya speech: "freedom....liberty....freedom...liberty..."

I wish we'd just call it the "New World Trade Center". Just saying WTC seems wrong

No need to call it the "new" World Trade Center. The entire complex is and always will be the World Trade Center. No need to restate the obvious. As far as this tower goes, most New Yorkers won't call it anything as formal as "1 WTC". That's just not the way it works. Didn't happen with the old towers, won't happen with the new ones.

I think the name "freedom tower" is extremely tacky and cliche. Internationally, it just makes America look even more hick. Besides, the government was totally involved in september 11th... these two bullshit wars have limited our "freedom" if anything

Yes, I have realized that I actually like this building now that I don't have to hate it because of that ridiculously jingoistic name.

It would be interesting to see the original #1 on that illustration as well. One of my favorite aspects of the original WTC was the tremendous number of floors (significantly more than the building formerly known as the Sears Tower, whose triple-digit floors are small and unoccupied aside from the observatory on 103), and it's a shame this is lost in the new design. I understand why it's desirable to have higher floor heights and all, but a 120 story 1776' (to the roof) building would still have taller floors than the original WTC. Too expensive, naturally...

I agree ^^^

This building has sped up quite a bit this month!!!

I'm so glad you can actually see/picture the base of the building and how enormous it is!!!

I remember in the summer it looked like nothing (no offense to any new yorkers out there)

***What will most people call this building?... Freedom Tower or 1 World Trade Centre

This will almost certainly be called 1WTC by the general public. The pace of construction will surely accelerate even more in the coming weeks and months.

No, the public will most certainly call it the Freedom Tower. Most people have no idea the official name was made 1WTC.

By the time it's completed, it should be known as 1WTC, just as the original.

NOBODY called it 1WTC. It was either the Twin Towers or the World Trade Center. The new complex will still be the World Trade Center, but the towers will have their individual distinctions, especially now that there are more of them.

Was the original tower designated One World Trade Center or 1 World Trade Center? Or were the spellings interchangable?

I hope it's One World Trade Center, cause 1 World Trade Center was for sure the old adress, just something to indicate the difference and such. Honestly, One World Trade Center is the buildings best name, and the complex it's in is the World Trade Center. Why don't many see this as good? You can nickname the tower 'Freedom Tower' like old 1 WTC and 2 WTC were nicknamed the 'Twin Towers'. Followin me camera guy?

Long live One World Trade Center

I will always call it Freedom Tower. It looks like a "Freedom" Tower and not the old World Trade Center area. And why isn't it just World Trade Center? Why a 1?

The World Trade Center is a complex of buildings. It used to be seven I think but I am unsure how many there will be when construction is done.

NYT website has article on their website, top center, headlined "Deal Struck for 2 Towers at Ground Zero".

The picture of the WTC site is captioned "The Freedom Tower under construction at ground zero in New York, on Wednesday." So the name "Freedom Tower" just got a big boost in the popular lexicon.
