The Great Snow Squall of December 2010

Just finished shoveling my driveway and back yard for the 4th time since the snow started falling on Sunday. Took some pics afterward that you might enjoy:

That fence is 4 feet. Thus by comparison I think snow is about 100cm high.

Ok this sucks! I want to go in the hot tub but there's a massive snow drift on the top of the house right over it.
-Chucked a few snowballs at it.. but its up there really good.

I just can't get over how much snow has fallen. Never seen this much in my life!

Every 3 or 4 hours I've been shoveling my driveway so that it doesn't pile up, and since yesterday morning I thought the cycle would never stop, until...about a half an hour ago I saw the sun peaking through a crack in the clouds!

It may be finally over!

All I can say is...holy shit. I'd heard there was quite a dump in London but I had no idea how much there was.

We still only have like 2 inches here, and that's just from the accumulation over today (we had about an inch this morning). It's snowing pretty heavily now, though.

It's official, there's gonna be another snow day tomorrow!
All schools including UWO and Fanshawe are closed.

3 days in a row schools have been closed...

London Transit is also canceled tomorrow. Same goes with most non-essential public services and many private businesses.

Apparently the city came extremely close to declaring a state of emergency today. The fact is most people still have heat, power, water etc so it never came into effect. Nevertheless, London has asked surrounding cities for help.


Some rough stats as of Tuesday afternoon:

70cm fell at the London Airport
90cm fell in southwest London (where the pictures above were taken)
110cm in northwest London
140+ in Lucan area (not too far north of London)

Another 20-40cm could be coming by the end of Wednesday. Things will clear up on Thursday but more snow is forecasted for Friday and Saturday.

Looks like we're going to have a good old fashioned winter. (And winter doesn't officially start until Dec. 21 )

Holy crap. Only now do I finally feel thankful for living in St. Catharines. We have about 5cm.

I am in the 110cm territory (Hyde Park). Past my waist. I am not joking. Up to my shoulders in the drifts in my backyard.

I don't think I've ever had back-to-back snow days... but 3 in a row?

Apparently this is the worst storm in over 30 years. It's bad but not brutal. There hasn't been much blowing snow in the city which is a good thing.

Nearly all of us have heat and power too. I've seen several Bell and Rogers vans drive down my street which implies people might have problems with their cable/internet but the basics are still there.

Glad Joe didn't call a state of emergency. Remember the army in Toronto a few years back? Nuts.

In Thunder Bay it is -20, very windy, and there is almost no snow on the ground. Just an inch thick layer of ice. (I was going to say firn but Wikipedia says that firn is something other than what I thought; what we've got on the ground is part actual ice, part snow that melted then refroze and is now a horrible crunchy substance covered in a fine dusting of vehicle exhaust--in some places it is in fact pitch black.)

So... you guys are probably on the better end of this system.

3 days of no school is un-heard of. Even 2 days is extremely rare.

I doubt it will happen again tomorrow. At least where I am it's been sunny and clear all day and the most snow we got was mybe 3 or 4 cm. Has it been snowing more where you are?

I think the main reason there was another snow day today was so they could finally clear the roads and restore services without lots of people out.

I was quite surprised to hear they decided to pull transit for today already by yesterday afternoon. Usually London can rebound pretty good regardless by the next day if there's a clear night of NO snow.

I can't get over the difference in snow between London and Waterloo. With only being a little over an hour apart, the difference is amazing. There's only maybe 5 cm on the ground here now...
