Indeed, these are big transfer girders that will support columns above for the rest of the height of the building. The space below is "ballroom" areas that need to be column-free, so these girders will pick up columns above and shift the loads to the core wall and exterior columns.

Not the only one. I agree with this as well. I'm eager to see how the finished product will look like but I don't get complaints about the pace of a u/c projects. Do people think that projects not moving "quickly enough" are intentional delays? I am by no means a construction expert and I assume the pace is dictated by circumstances unique to each project that I (and I suspect most others here) am not in a position to know or understand.

90% of the work that goes into a project is done once it gets above ground.

Let's not forget the wonderful Fun surprises Lenfest found hiding in the dirt. This project's been by far the most interesting to watch.

I get a laugh out of some posters who seemingly take personal affront when construction doesn't proceed on a schedule that makes sense to them.
I know that there is an actual 'schedule where even months before any construction starts, each day is planed out in detail. For example, the work of the crane is laid out down to the minute, at least in theory-------But stuff happens. So when there is seemingly a slow down I'm curious as to why; has there been a shipment of bad glass to a manufacturer of wall panels which holds up that work? Someone a week ago or so on this thread said something that seemed to imply that that the concrete has to pass some kind of test after 28 days before the curtain wall can be hung from it, so what happens if the concrete 'fails'?
I wish that the whole process was a lot more public. Ever since I was a very young kid I've always been interested in how big buildings get built; it seems like its a dance that plays itself over a period of several years. For some reason I think it would increase my enjoyment if more of the details were in the public field of view.

BTW, after the hole for this project was finally finished, I think this job has been moving along at a reasonable pace. Maybe I'm just saying that because thanks to the regular photo updates (except when somebody thinks its ok for them to take a vacation!) daily progress can be seen.

Still same height since May 22nd, but that rebar is packed in tight now. Putting up the support braces so we should get a pour soon.

You all are lucky I decided to swing by the office even though I'm on vacation.

Last picture from me for a while:

PS - It's nice spending a day in center city acting like a tourist every once in a while. So often I'm too busy working or watching the kids to enjoy the city beyond the architecture. Spent a few hours shopping up and down Walnut and Chestnut and it was great.
