Sorry but there was a few errors in the data I posted last year, where:
- Most trip that differs between school day/non-school day were missing
- Error in data for trip begin/end at non-major stop. ie. the 130 that begins at Deer Lake Parkway, most trolly routes, etc.
- A few short-turn trips were missing all-together
- The 3:56AM trip of the 403 was missing.. I didn't know it start this early...
- Missing Friday-only trip.. my new data cannot distinguish these from the others, so I have to add them in

The effect were about 60 missing trips, 50 missing hours, max vehicle undercount by 10, and the average trip length off by 6 seconds.. Apparently, the number "1003" is actually the peak vehicles this year.. I'm good at predicting the future, eh?

I had corrected the post above. In fact, there might be still some error within, but I'm doing this so it will be consistent with the data below, and any data in the future if I'm still doing this.

Now... the data for September this year, lets see how the "funding stabilization" do to our transit system...

10 Earliest starts:
Code:
403N	3:56a
701W	4:10a
351N	4:11a
601N	4:21a
041E	4:22a
010E	4:25a
791W	4:25a
403N	4:29a
502W	4:32a
301W	4:35a
The 351 trips now depart later, and the 791 depart earlier. Apart from this, the list is essentially unchanged.

10 Latest Finishes:
Code:
N10S	4:01x
N19E	4:03x
N10S	4:20x
N10N	4:27x
N19E	4:28x
N9E	4:29x
N10S	4:50x
N10N	4:57x
N10S	5:20x
N10N	5:27x
Apart from 1 N10 trip running slower than last year, nothing else changed.

Longest trips, there are 27 (-2) trips that's are longer than 1.5 hr:
Code:
1:55	997W [9:27a, 10:27a]
1:42	997E [12:55p, 1:25p, 7:00p, 7:30p, 8:00p]
1:37	502E [3:00p]
1:35	017E [2:16p, 2:28p, 2:39p, 2:49p]
1:34	160E [4:12p]
1:33	017E [2:59p, 3:09p, 3:19p, 3:29p, 3:39p, 3:47p, 3:55p, 4:03p, 4:11p]
1:33	160E [4:42p]
1:31	017E [4:19p, 4:27p, 4:35p]
1:30	017E [2:04p]
The trip for eastbound 17 between 1:30p and 2:00p were running about 2-4 min faster, hence dropped out of the list

Shortest trip is only 3 min, and there are 19 of them:
Code:
028N	[5:47a]
C36S	[5:33p]
C87W	[all 17 trips]
And there are 9 (+1) trips that are only 4 min long:

Interesting that the buses on Broadway (combined 9 + 99) have more service hours than any one Skytrain line. Of course they're lower capacity than Skytrain, but it's pretty clear that Translink is throwing pretty much everything they can at Broadway.

I would do that.. later.. because I found an error after I posted the data

Since Translink's GTFS data does not distinguish between schoolday trip and non-schoolday trip, I have to filter them out myself, and apparently my algorithm missed that one single trip (out of a total of 22k+). That particular trip was not on the print timetable so I need to dig deeper into it. And then I need to check over my 2009 data (or maybe even 2008 and 2007 if anyone is interested in historical change in service level) to see if the same error occurs.. Give me a day or two, or maybe three...

In the end, you'll probably see the total trip reduces by 1 and the total service hour decreases by 40 minutes

Interesting how the 22 has far more service hours than the 41. Yet the 41 has a far better headway. This goes to show how the longer trip length of the 22 negatively impacts the headway by having the spread out the service.

Shouldn't the headway is more related to actual ridership?

I also find it interesting how many people forget that other routes run on Broadway, notably the 17 UBC from Granville to UBC, but also the 16 Arbutus (between Granville and Arbutus), the 17 Oak (between Pine and Oak), the 8 Fraser (Between Main and Fraser).

I wonder if the ridership data collected shows the Broadway trips that are handled by buses other than 9 or 99?
If so, how can these numbers be folded into the ridership stats for Broadway?

ie: if I need to get to Maple from Granville, I'll take whatever WB bus comes first - 9, 16, or 17 - but will a trip on the 16 or 17 be considered a 'broadway trip' in the ridership stats?

You are correct that the targeted headway is related to the ridership.

But if you notice the 22 has a lower head way during most of the day compared to the 41. Yet the 22 has a much higher service hours compared to the 41.

So even though there are more total service hours per day on the 22 route. Because that route is longer than the 41 route. It means they have to spread out the buses more. Hence you end up with a lower headway. '

The 22 route is about 1hr 6 minutes long. While the 41 to UBC is 51 minutes long.

So a bus on the 22 needs 15 minutes more of service compared to a bus on the 41. A bus would get to the end and turn around before the 22 bus was done. Thus lowering the head way on the 41.

Hope that makes sense

On top of that, the #22 has branches that spread out the service even more. In fact, the #22 is the only route that serves more than 200 different stops in the lower mainland! No other route I can find has more than 170 stops beside the #N9 (which has 180).

And a trivia: the #22 is currently the only 2-digits route that crosses the Fraser (in other word, some #22 trips also serve Richmond)

I've plotted a map showing the minimum frequency of bus at each stop between 7am and 7pm:

Here's the legend:

Despite what the legend says, the algorithm actually calculates the number of bus at the stop per hour, which are 30, 20, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and <=1 respectively.

The current algorithm does not distinguish the different routes that shares a stop, so a route running every 5 minutes has the same color as 12 different hourly route sharing a stop. Sorry, I only spent 45-minutes of work to plot it

The last category actually should say "Less than 30 minutes" rather than hourly.

It only record the minimum number of bus shown up in each hour. For example, if a route comes every 15-30 minutes throughout the day, but if some part of the schedule is 12:59pm, 1:30pm, 2:00pm.. then the stop will be put in the last category as it does not meet the criteria for every 30 minutes for the sole 31 minutes gap (yes.. it is really really strict...).

The terminus station always get overcounted as there is a bus that terminate there, and a bus that orginate there... Maybe I should add a filter to remove the "unload only" stops...

translink statistics

Translink ridership (unlinked trip) since 1986:

Translink operating cost/trip since 1986

Skytrain total cost/trip since 1986

What was the cause of the large dip in ridership?

The transit strike in 2001. Hence, the cost per trip also skyrocketed during the same period.

An occasional statistic update

2 spreadsheets:
Translink ridership, operations and capital datas

Translink service datas
(those statistics are similar to the ones nname used to collect for year 2008-2010 as presented in his previous posts on this thread).

More detail on those spreadsheets at http://voony.wordpress.com/2014/04/1...-spreadsheets/

That said, I have added some datas relative to the route mileage and vehicle type, allowing to generate charts like below:

the vehicle type per route could not be correct: you are welcome to provide correction here or on the blog

For reference, below is the file used to generate the September 2013 values:

Thanks Voony. Good work. Does anyone know what the existing capacity in pphpd is on Broadway?

I'm at a loss for words. What a comprehensive amount of data you track! Thank you.

I wonder what you use to generate the distance data. I tried to use the 'shape' data in GTFS, but they seems to be very inaccurate. Try to plot the shape for Expo and the 97 B-Line, and you'll see..

For my data, I uses the straight line distance between stops. Might not be the best indicator, but at least it is less error prone.

It is very hard to determine the vehicle used for route as many routes now operate as mixed vehicles. This is as far as I know:

134, 136, 153, 157, 337, 531 - Shuttles during weekends
188 - 40ft bus during peak, while shuttle during off-peak
345 - Shuttle during evening
C30, C92 - 40ft bus during peak hours, the C92 can get Orions too
97, 143, 150, 160, 190, 257, 403, 701 - Mixed between 40ft and 60ft buses
227, 251*, 252*, 256, 388, 609 - Fully shuttle
311 - Orion
394 - Mixed Orion and standard 40ft bus
C28* - Fully shuttle, used to use 40ft bus during peak

And there are some occasionally weird ones:
135, 145 - The trips made from PoCo bus are usually 40ft instead of 60ft
410 - Few trips run by Orion or 60ft bus
407, C86, C87, C88 - Few trips run by Orion
401, 861 - Few trips run by 60ft bus
C24, C37, C93 - Few trips run by 40ft bus
101, 155 - Few trips (school special?) run by Orion

* = recent changes
