I still can't believe Calgary let horse racing leave the Stampede.. and I think it would be just as big of a mistake to let it leave Northlands

that said, the airport might be the best of the B plans.. make sure the beer selection is better than Northlands and it could be an ideal hideout while the ladies hit the outlet mall

as long as the track is right up close to the golf course area, it won't be that much closer to the runways than Northlands was to the municipal airport, don't see noise being a showstopper

The airport has regulations that determine what can and can't be built in its surroundings. The NEF zone, determined by the Federal Government, specifically addresses noise. The area west of Redtail Landing Golf Course prohibits Outdoor Spectator Sports Facilities which includes a Horse Racing Facility. This location is not likely ever to be approved against federal regulations. Furthermore, Northlands Park is located more than 5K (5000 M) from the Municiple Airport. The proposed land is less than 500 m and noise is a factor. Redtail Landing can't be happy with the prospect of horse barns being located feet away from their clubhouse either.

So your saying ERRA approved the site and leased the land out for the Casino and Racetrack without knowing the requirement despite Federal representatives being on the Board of ERRA? Wow!!

What about Castrol raceway? That makes a lot more noise the a horse race track and attracts hundreds if not thousands of people.

Nothing has been approved or leased when it comes to the land. Horse Racing Alberta selected Century Casinos to build the facility. In order to proceed, Century must obtain a "Racing Entertainment Licence" which there is currently a moratorium on. They also need to meet specific debt to equity ratios, and other criteria imposed by AGLC. If/when Century gets this "currently unavailable" licence, they then will then be faced with the restriction of the land they have selected.
The NEF addesses : "Spectator Sports Facility"-...includes an animal racing track but does not include an auto racing track"
To recap: A Government appointed body, Horse Racing Alberta, conducted a request for proposal for a licence that is suspended "indefinitely" by a Goverment body (AGLC), and then went on to select a group that proposed to build on Land that is prohibited by a Government body (Fed/Prov)

As someone above aptly described it, WOW.

The NEF, Noise Exposure Forecast, focuses on the noise emitted by the airport not the facility/land use. The act specially excludes an auto racing track under spectator sports facilities but includes an animal racing track. Therefore car racing is allowed but horse racing is not.

Be interesting to see what happens if Northlands decides to keep their race track.

Horse racing doesn't make Northlands any money as it is. They'll be happy to see it go.

Yeah but the article Cold posted has this:

Quote:
The need for a new racetrack in Edmonton followed Northlands‘ announcement last year that it was getting out of the horse racing business.

But in January Northlands president Tim Reid said the non-profit society was still interested in staking out a piece of the industry for the long term.
I could see Northlands keeping the track if their plans to rebuild it into a concert/festival venue fall through.
