When will St. John's get a supertall?

Or should I start my own thread for this question?

While we're at it, let's get rid of those two threads about the NHL coming to Winnipeg and Quebec City, the thread about the Edmonton City Centre Airport and the thread about Calgary electing a muslim mayor. Those clearly don't belong in the Canada section.

lol... Edmonton.

There has never been a proposal rejected on that basis. Trump Toronto would have been a supertall if not for weak sales due to bad location. No one ever mentioned the CN Tower when that project got approved. Furthermore, there are parts of downtown Toronto where a supertall could be built without competing visually with the CN Tower, such as where Aura is currently being constructed.

We're not talking about Toronto building the world's biggest or tallest tower. We're just talking about Toronto building a supertall. So even if your statment were correct (which it's not) that would be irrelevant to this discussion.

The fact that we havent built a SuperTall yet for commercial space answers the question of demand. I dont see how there would be any more in the near future when we have the suburbs expanding and surplus of space in the CBD.

Further, there isnt a demand for SuperTall residential either, otherwise we wouldve had one this last unprecedented condo boom. Not Enough people want to live above 50 stories.

Constraints, yes. How many building have been lowered in height after public consultation.

Few buildings have been lowered in height after public consultation. In fact several have increased in height after the initial planning application was proposed.

Yes, there wasn't a demand for a supertall condo in this last condo boom, but as the city grows larger and more wealthy residents move into the city, that demand will inevitably increase. A few years ago there was no demand for a 5 star hotel in Toronto and now we have four of them. Things change.

I have no idea what the hell is wrong with a lot of the forumers here (and so many Canadians in general). There's this whole entire culture of hate for anyone or anyplace in our country that happens to have it better than where or whoever you are. Being Canadians (just like the rest of you!), Torontonians end up finding ourselves apologizing for living here and slagging ourselves and our city just cuz there's so much negativity aimed at Toronto from all corners of the country... it's no wonder we end up voting in a vision-less moron as a mayor.

I live in Toronto, I don't think I live "in the centre of the universe" which seems to be some sort of slogan invented by people living elsewhere in the country. I like it here, just as much as I assume you like where you live. I can joke with you about where you live and I can joke about where I live in a friendly ribbing.. but over the past 9 years it's been the exact same BS on this forum where it seems to have almost become accepted policy that Toronto-bashing is ok.

On this forum, it seems that every time there's a thread about Toronto the Toronto-bashing Trolls come out demanding that these thread get shoved into some Toronto sub-forum and out of the Canada forum.

Quit the trolling and grow up. This includes some of you "old-timers" here.

As if you people haven't caused enough damage to the forum over the past few years driving almost all the Toronto forumers to UT & SSC. Where is the Toronto subforum you ask? We had one, it died because the Toronto posters left seeking friendlier skies, kicked out by their fellow Canadians REMEMBER??

I resent when the mods move this thread instead of renaming it it as I proposed.

When will Canada get a Supertall : When and Where?

If Toronto in the title is so offensive for the Canada section then get the hockey in Winnipeg and QC threads out of there NOW!

I resent that the mods allow other city-specific threads in the Canada forum, but not one about Toronto.

Tony, I can't disagree with a word you've said, except to point out that it's by no means Toronto-only. Calgary has the exact same issue, pretty much word-for-word the way you described it. I've started calling us the "Toronto of the West" when discussing how Canadians treat the city. There's also a strong parallel in that both cities are full of people who are very proud of their city and genuinely happy to live where they do, which offends some. Also, both of our hockey teams currently suck donkey balls.

Hence my subtle joke about a Muslim mayor for Toronto, referencing the last time someone DARED make a city-specific thread that wasn't Winnipeg or Edmonton.

I myself just posed a question. St. John's is the city most in need of office space seeing it has the 0% class A office space available.

New Rules Would Limit Building Heights in Toronto

But yeah, the whole thing is getting out of hand.

Now that cooler heads have prevailed, "reason" has seen the light and this thread has been renamed and restored to its rightful position... We can continue the discussion at hand.

I put it out there that we may all be surprised where the first Supertall shows up. It's not that far out there to see a 300m + Hotel/Observation tower in Niagara Falls in the next 10 years.

Picture a Donald Trump type, wanting to get in on the casino hotel game there.

That would be embarrassing if Calgary, or Vancouver beat us to the punch on a supertall....

Like I said, Aura, 45 Bay, and Signature all have a shot at the Supertall Title.

You can count Vancouver out, 95% chance Van will never have a supertall. . . 95%

Does Vancouver have an overall height restriction in the entire city? If so, yeah - no supertall unfortunately.

I'm more concerned by what effect El Nino will have on it.

^Here we go again.

In any other thread in the world, posting the words "Who cares?" is considered trolling... and here's why:

Not caring is a right and an opinion you are entitled to hold, but in order to be considered pertinent to the topic it must be backed up with plausible reasoning or it is just insightful and meant to provoke. And provocation is the definition of trolling.

It is rhetorical to ask "Who cares?" when the answer is obviously "Some people who are members of this website.'"

If it is a topic that doesn't interest you then don't continue reading and certainly don't bother to post or you will be guilty of being interested. Even if it is to play devil's advocate or spoiled brat, it can be considered interest if you repeatedly post in a thread. And then you are just a hypocrite and a sh#@ disturber and no one likes those.

I just fail to see the important of some having a building that meets some arbitrary 300 m height and also arbitrarily isn't a building of a certain type or doesn't include spires (unless its "decorative"...also arbitrary). Skyscrapers are cool and all, but this whole "herp derp when we gonna get a supertall?" thing strikes me as some sort of juvenile penis-envy thing. And for all intents and purposes, we already have multiple "supertalls" (FCP & CN Tower, at the very least).
