The convention centre first started operating at Canada Place in 1986, I don't know what would have been used in the city for similar events before that, maybe Hastings Park buildings, the (then new) BC Place, and other smaller venues?

Some history on Canada Place's construction: https://www.canadaplace.ca/about-us/history/

Before Canada Place was there, there was the old B-C pier: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CPR_Pier_B_and_C
, and it was built on top as a reconstruction. There used to be CPR steamships docking there until 1955(?)

Coal Harbour 1930s From: http://news.buzzbuzzhome.com/2013/07...r-skyline.html

Also, Ballantyne Pier , was around way back then also.

I can't seem to find when the first actual 'cruise ship' visited Vancouver, but passenger ships of one type or another have been running out of the port since the 1800s.

Interesting how there used to be a trestle from Granville Island to the foot of Burrard Bridge. Very interesting video (slideshow) of the route! So many twists and turns, but I was able to keep track of where the train was.

The angle is a bit misleading, it actually comes in from Yaletown, the video start off approximately here or in this historic photo.
You can still see the foot of the trestle at the southeast side of Burrard Bridge.
EDIT: Even better picture here: here

You are completely right. Everything looked so different back then that it is hard to stay on the map.

Compiled footage from when Main Street - Science World Station was only a pre-build demonstration station and 25% smaller.
This is the only known video footage that still exists (but contributions are always welcome for achiving )

There are many videos of Lions Gate Bridge under construction, but I have never seen one with video material from the very beginning of construction when only the trees had just been logged. The whole area looked so different before the bridge.

Another video by BC History channel. Amazing summer time aerial footage of Vancouver in mid-1980s! When West End was still new-ish and the place to live. I wish someone would reproduce the same angles with with a drone to give a comparison from today.

Another aerial from the 1980s, this time from the north. I didn't know that the tip of the Canada Place used to look completely different. I suppose they changed it to accommodate more ship traffic? Anyone know when was this?

Cool videos. I feel so old for remembering Vancouver like that. I was in Australia in 1985, but things didn't change so fast back then.

Before the internet was so useful, buildings like Canada Place would change and you'd ask people you know when that happened and they might not know and that would be the end of it. You'd never know the answer.

Sheraton-Landmark Hotel, the West End and Coal Harbour - December 1976

Known as the Empire Landmark Hotel in more recent years, there are plans to demolish this hotel, which is the tallest free standing hotel in the City. It will make way for two shorter towers. The revolving restaurant on the top floor was called Cloud 9 and that shut down for good on September 30, 2017.

This photo looks north with the North Shore mountains in the background.
