Sad loss for sure. His legacy will live on through his buildings, and the continued transformation of Surrey City Centre initially sparked by Central City over a decade ago. We are lucky to have one last building designed by him coming with this first phase of the SFU expansion project.
Toderian points to Thom's design for the redevelopment of Central City in Surrey as one example of how he helped redefine the whole idea of a 'suburban downtown.'
"He was one of these people who challenged the idea that only Vancouver would be an urban place... and he was quite right about that."
I salute him for all the amazing designs that he and his company brought to Surrey.
Thank you Bing RIP.
A Great loss of a man, who's DNA is in the heart of the change Surrey is experiencing.
Excavation moving along. Can't imagine they are going much further down seeing as there is only 1 level of parking. Just need to finish digging the rest of the site.
Trees were cleared on the City owned lots to the west of the green house (now owned by SFU) last week (Lots 12, 13, 14 on the plan below). Looks like they may be using this area for construction staging purposes for now, but not really sure.
I've driven by a few times and have noticed the green house is being used and wondered who would want to live so close next to a construction site. I guess this makes sense - to have it used as a construction staging area.
This area is progressing at lightning speed and with Prime construction happening so close, it (for now) looks like a big mess. Can't wait to see it finished.
^ Yeah there is no one living in that house anymore. Being used as a construction office it looks like. The SFU plans show it as the future site of the SFU residence building.
The area is changing fast. Already looking a lot different than it did just a year ago with all the clearing and construction underway.
Thanks. A good vantage point to watch the area transform for sure.
As for the site clearing west of the SFU project, I was just informed via a comment on my blog that it will be a temporary parking lot until a future application is submitted on that site (Maybe to replace the one that was removed?)
The white duplex is not being torn down at this time... It's still occupied and there are no Development Applications on the property. There is a For Sale sign in the front yard though. The storage you see beside it is within the new Lane that will open once Prime and SFU are complete.

At least the green house in the foreground is being torn down finally
Man, does anyone else remember what this road looked like before all this happened? The ratty, run-down houses along the west side, the cheapo offices on the east... How times have changed.
with the new arenas be built down the hill won't be long before they get torn down as well. On that note I keep meaning to head down toward that area and see whats happening with the location they are being built at.
FYI, the house adjacent to the SFU construction site has now been demolished. As well, there was a joint announcement by Linda Hepner, Christy Clark and PM Trudeau at SFU Surrey this morning regarding construction of the new SFU campus.
