It's not exactly a sudden rush, though there has been an increase in the past couple years.

Here's the number of 99m+ buildings completed or expected to be completed for each year:

1992 - 9
1993 - 8
1994 - 16
1995 - 14
1996 - 14
1997 - 5
1998 - 15
1999 - 8
2000 - 19
2001 - 14
2002 - 21
2003 - 33
2004 - 25
2005 - 22
2006 - 31
2007 - 36
2008 - 19

Construction on the Nihombashi-Mitsui Tower has been completed. The museum, shops, and restaurants should be finished by around October.

Nice, nice to see such tall towers like the Nishi-Shinjuku 3-chome office tower being proposed. Still I'd love to see them build some nice trademark building for Tokyo.

I thought earthquakes were a major problem to build higher but Taipei has earthquakes yet they built that super tall tower, so I think a safe tower can be done with good engineering.

Thx Lee for posting. Some weren`t known to me. I knew though that 2007 was going to be the most productive year ever.

I like the world city project. it`s so huge.

There`s no need for taller things. Tall towers are good in getting an image that you advanced, they are a statement, but they aren`t cost efficient.

Tokyo doesn`t need a trademark tower. it has Tokyo Tower for symbol, and for the rest let the neon speak for itself.

Wow...Tokyo really likes its skyscrapers boxy. That's not a knock - just an observation based on this latest bunch of pics.

Japanese architects seem to like 1960's style boxes.

If there's such a thing as an asian architecture, Tokyo is at the exact opposite of it.
