"Stop Building-Code Exceptions for Blockbuster Development at 4th and Harrison in Portland"

Some people have completely no idea what an "exception" in the code means. An "exception" is not like a loop hole or something.

To be pedantic, they're also confused between the building code and the zoning code.

Yea me too. The reason I even asked was because this building seems like it's been talked about for over a year now I thought it was well on its way to break ground soon

Drawings [PDF - 40 MB].

Also, we should probably change the thread name to "4th & Harrison", which is the name the developer is using. Also it has 15 floors, and reaches a height of 175'.

Is it me or is this building taking forever to start?

I often feel this way about projects. Sometimes, they are announced, I get excited, then the process takes forEVER.

Remember how awful the original designs were? We should be glad that the process slowed this one down and helped to shape it.

On the other hand, I feel like some projects have shovels in the ground the day after approval.

Very true. This is definitely a project the design commission can use to justify their existence. From such terrible beginnings, this one has really turned into a beauty.

new design is way better. Only thing that sucks is the loading dock on Harrison.

That is going to be a disaster if it is used during any sort of peak times.

Otherwise, let's get building (even if it will block my view of the hills)

That is more in line with what I would expect to be built on that site.

Starting a thread doesn't give you the power to subsequently rename it.

Ah, OK. I thought only the person who started the thread (or a mod) could change the title info.

Staff Report [PDF], which does not yet recommend approval.

Memo to the Design Commission. A lot of letters in opposition.

Wow. Some of the logic in these responses is really reaching.
"Portland must grow within its limits..." Yeah, sure. Just not near you.
"...for what has been a lovely, human scale neighborhood." Buddy, this block sits next to a concrete, 60's high-rise.

A lot of these letters also make it sound like the grocery store will be receiving deliveries every 5 minutes 24 hours a day. Sheesh, Portland!
