Kaohsiung is often a forgotten part of the Taiwan experience. Located in the sunnier and hotter southern part of the island, this is a cheaper alternative to Taiwan, and has a good share of historic buildings, street art, gritty streets, and street food.
Kaohsiung seems to have a lot to offer! What immediately comes to my mind when hearing the name is the black skyscraper that once was one of the world's tallest.
Located quite a distance from the city centre but near an MRT station, the Ciaotou Sugar Refinery was the first sugar refinery in Taiwan. Established by the Mitsui Corporation in 1902, it closed in 1999 and was converted into a tourist destination, showcasing the industry and allowing a glimpse of what the facility was like inside.
