Nucor to spend $290M expanding steel mills in Memphis and two other cities

Construction Starts on $20 Million NEA Baptist Center for Cancer Care

The 34,000-SF center will feature all of its cancer care services under one roof - from diagnosis to chemotherapy treatments to radiation to support, according to a NEA Baptist news release. The center will be built on NEA's 80-acre medical campus that includes a five-story, 550,000-SF, 181-bed hospital and a 213,000-SF physicians office building. The construction value of the hospital and office building is $165.5 million.

UTHSC in Memphis says proposed simulation building key to medical education

University of Tennessee Health Science Center officials said they'll get to work on the school's multi-disciplinary simulation building "as fast as we can" if the legislature approves a $24.1 million funding request. Gov. Bill Haslam requested the funds for the building in his 2013 budget, which he unveiled during his State of the State address Monday in Nashville.

Memphis firm unveils plans for zero-energy building

They'll replace the old welcome center for travelers entering Tennessee on northbound I-55 in Whitehaven. The 4,500-square-foot welcome center, plus vending and storage buildings, are designed to use no more energy than that produced by rooftop solar panels. The $3.75 million project represents the first zero-energy building owned by the state.

During the project development process, TDOT worked closely with residents from the historic French Fort Community, which was separated from Downtown when I-55 was constructed in the 1950s. “It has been a long time coming and I am glad there is no negative impact,” Sara Lewis, president of the French Fort Community Association, said. “I am excited and delighted we are moving forward with this project for our transportation and our highways.” TDOT will now work to develop the preliminary right of way plans for 2013. It will bring the public together in a meeting this fall for discussion.

Le Bonheur begins demolition of old hospital marking final phase of new construction

The demolition is making way for a new driveway and front yard for the 225-bed, 12-story hospital that opened in 2010 as part of a $340 million expansion project. Le Bonheur also renovated the remaining part of the original hospital, creating more than 270,000 square feet for research and education. The building is now called the Children’s Foundation Research Institute.

Aldo’s Pizza Pies seeks facade improvement grant

Tenants hope for Liberty Bowl stadium upgrade with Memphis Tigers' move to Big East

With Wednesday's announcement that the University of Memphis is upgrading its conference affiliation status -- moving from Conference USA to the Big East in 2013 -- will an upgrade at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, follow? The nearly 50-year-old, city-owned facility has been home to Tiger football and the AutoZone Liberty Bowl since the mid-1960s, and the Southern Heritage Classic for more than two decades. Although various renovations through the years have improved the game-day experience for fans and media, more upgrades are needed according to the three major tenants, all of whom are hoping the Big East's invitation to the U of M will be a catalyst for an accelerated facelift.
