Compelling thread. Of all the places I have been in the south Memphis is the one that most reminds me of the old industrial north. I mean that in a good way. It has the same grit and indestructible spirit. And better barbecue.

Really cool set, I love when I get to see an American city I know next to nothing about.

Not a fan of the houses, but what a backdrop for some street kickball for neighborhood kids!

If I recognize that street scene correctly, that's Mud Island, which is one of the best new urbanist neighborhoods going. The houses are designed in historic styles that reflect and respect Memphis's Southern heritage, location, and climate.

I've been in Memphis for about 4 years now and I see something new everyday. Its amazing the amount of grit you can find in Memphis and the amount of old building stock that it pretty much still as it was decades ago. Much of this is due to the lack of redevelopment (tearing down the old buildings) in various parts of Memphis. Although many of these buildings are vacant and covered with graffiti, they are still beautiful.

That's correct, that photo was taken on the backside of Harbor Town (Mud Island). It doesn't look quite as urban as the other parts of Harbor Town, but like you said it is one of the best new urbanist neighborhoods that I have seen.

Memphis looks dope... outside of a single trip to ATL & New Orleans I'm as unfamiliar with the South as I am with Canada. That might change if I end up going to school in the south...

again, i'm so glad you gave a nod to elmwood cemetery. beautiful photos. may be hard for some to believe, but a few years ago, i went early one summer morning, while the dew and fog was still in the cemetery. i ended up staying about 6+ hours looking at the beautiful stones, monuments, and mausoleum. i promised myself that i would return and finish my exploration. it is a beautiful and peaceful place in which to study architecture.
