I REALLY don't understand the railing issues in this city.

Manufacturers can powder coat these sh*tty aluminum railings in ANY colour, and usually in a dozen or more standard colours that don't require additional cost.

Are we really getting super duper cheap and having NO colour at all? WHY would you not want to match the rest of the aluminum elements on the building?

Edit: After having reviewed the playback footage (renderings) my call was a bit wrong. Its the WINDOW FRAMES that don't match the renderings. This building was supposed to be 'light' with clear anodized window and balcony aluminum, while the other two unbuilt were supposed to be 'dark' with dark aluminum frames/railings and black-smoked glass rails.

Someone got a mix-and-match deal and now we're all off-kilter.

I agree, it's nice to see it moving forward.
Hopefully it remains at a quick pace, will be nice to see the whole project completed.

He came back and clarified that later, to say that the structure will be rebuilt, which was always the plan. Not quick enough to stop the stream of twitter outrage mind you.

Japanese tiki hut? I know what he's referring to, but that wasn't a tiki hut. Not the right terminology.

I do wonder why it had to be demolished. If you're rebuilding it as is on the same sight, why was it not possible to just keep it? Oh, probably parking garage. That's always the answer.

There is parking underneath, and it would be called a pagoda, not a tiki hut.

LOL, there was nothing Japanese about that place, it was Polynesian/Pacific Island inspired. It was called Talisman because of the Tiki theme so Tiki hut is actually fitting (just not the Japanese part).

'Tiki hut' at former Carling Avenue hotel torn down
Japanese-inspired structure couldn't be relocated, says city

Arthur White-Crummey · CBC News
Posted: Feb 15, 2024 4:00 AM EST | Last Updated: 1 hour ago

The Japanese pavilion at the former Travelodge Hotel on Carling Avenue is gone, to the surprise and dismay of the local councillor — but the developer says a structure in the same spirit will rise from the rubble.

The pavilion, built as an addition to what was then the Talisman Motor Inn, was listed on Ottawa's heritage registry. It was also known as the "Japanese steakhouse" and sometimes as the "tiki hut," since its basement once hosted a popular tiki bar called the Beachcomber Room.

River Coun. Riley Brockington said he was told about the demolition on Monday. When he went to visit the site where several new highrises are being built, he saw nothing left but the building's concrete skeleton.

He called the pavilion "a unique, historic feature and part of our city's history."

Another nothing burger story. It was always clear that the pagoda was coming down. Brockington was in the room when this was debated. Are Councillors actually paying attention?

So yeah, 100% for parking. "We'll keep it", "have to move it for parking", "oh, it's not in a good enough condition to move, WRECKING BALL!". You can't move a big concrete structure. That it was ever proposed was ridiculous.

Anyway:

And also, a bit on Teron Projects, including this one:

All the brown brick buildings from the 60s and 70s? Yeah, that's Teron. LOVED his brown brick. Better than charcoal!

It wasn't what we were expecting but at least it's something to break up the sterility. I like it so far....

I wonder if the wood will continue right up the corner of the podium??

That seems like a reasonable assumption given its current state.

I really like this one.

Now is "The Talisman" only the name of this tower, or the entire development?

They were adding some light Grey panels on the corners today. Was hopping onto the hwy so I couldn't take a photo. Looked good at a quick glance!

I like the podium but despise the tower portion of this.
