They were taken at about 4pm. Come say hi to me next time!

Wrecking ball and excavator going at the same time:

They are making quick work of this now. I watched for a while after work and comparing what I saw to the earlier videos, it looks like the crane operator has gotten far more efficient. I think the lower section will be pretty much gone by end of the day. Photos by me:

Thank you SekishikiMeikaiHa and kph06 for the videos and pictures. It is very interesting to see it come down.

Once it is gone then people will have a good view of the Citadel. Even once re-built I think that the three new slender towers will provide a much better view of the Citadel than the solid hotel structure that was there (prior to today).

Yes and yes -- but you definitely can't say this demolition has been slow! It was some time before they got started, but once they did it was smooth smashin'.

This is quick progress for what Halifax's downtown normally experiences.

Maybe they will use explosives for the tower?

Now you see it:

Now you don't:

Impressive! They really are moving now.

Looks like Verhagens Demolition got the contract. Same guys that fixed up the mess of the OEH demolition.

The comment about the crane driver getting better could be quite apt. Ive never seen Verhagen's use a crane and wrecking ball before, usually just excavators.

Matter of fact that crane and ball (in the earlier picture) appear to be brand new.

I had read that they were going to hoist an excavator to the top and have it work its way to the bottom, that would be a good photo op. Looking at the times of your photos in the afternoon I missed some good stuff just after I left.

I agree, these guys definitely showed they are efficient after they took over QEH. I think the crane was hired from Partner's Crane Just for this work. The last buildings I can remember being demolished by wrecking ball were the NFB building and building where Barrington Gate now stands, both on Barrington.

I also 98% sure I am standing near you while you took these photos.

I walked by this morning and the entire lower building has been flattened.

Great videos and history being made for Halifax. Viva los towers!

Eventually when enough density gets built up Halifax will be an even more walkable and environmentally friendly city.

Good luck living in the suburbs!

I wonder if it's Partners or just hauled down by partners.

Its a brand new crane, and wrecking ball work is very hard on a crane's mechanics. I cant see Partners letting Verhagen "wreck" their new crane, but stranger things have happened.

I did notice that Verhagens also has a new boom truck when they never had one before. That makes me think they have at least one crane operator on staff.

I think that Verhagens is in "expansion" mode and going to take on larger, higher projects. If thats the case, a crane is essential.

The day they set it up there were couple Parters vehicles on site. It definitely looks new, and it was really being rattled with some of the shots. This particular one has a 100 US-Ton capacity, which isn't that much for a crawler.

Here are a few photos from this morning by me:

Thank you for your images SekishikiMeikaiHa, they give good perspective on how the scale of towers at the corner will be more prominent. This is especially true given the higher floor count on all 3 towers.

Brunswick may have its town "corridor" when the Citadel development is complete and definitely if the trinity church happens sometime soon.
