Downtown Updates - Public Safety Complex

http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=148...s_cid=queue-14

Following: Renderings of the future Public Safety Building in Salt Lake City. The building will be net zero, producing as much energy as it uses.

"The goal is for the building to produce as much energy as it uses," said lead designer David Brems of GSBS Architects. If that goal is achieved it would be Utah's first "net zero" building, a designation claimed by only a handful of structures across the country.

The building will be headquarters for Salt Lake City's police and fire departments. It will also house the city's Emergency Operations Center and 911 dispatch center...

"There's enough solar power on the building to run that emergency operations center if everything else is disrupted," Brems said.

Thank you, I plan to visit SLC next year when the light rail connection to the airport is completed. Thought it would be nice to have this Public Safety Complex done as well. The light rail connection is supposed to be done by summer too right?

Disney-esque fountain debuts at Farmington’s Station Park

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/money/5...mplex.html.csp

Attractions » 59 computer-controlled nozzles part of showpiece at shopping-office complex

By Vince Horiuchi - The Salt Lake Tribune

The owners and operators of the new Station Park shopping and office complex in Farmington unveiled a multimillion-dollar show fountain Friday that brings a small taste of Disneyland to Utah.

The fountain is a 5,000-square-foot showpiece that has two pools connected by a waterfall and 59 computer-controlled nozzles that shoot water 30 feet to 60 feet in the air to songs by artists such as The Beatles, Frank Sinatra and Michael Bublé.

The feature is in a park in front of the Cinemark Theaters on the south end of the open-air shopping complex.

Like the famed "World of Color" fountain show at the California Adventure Park, which is part of the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, Calif., the Station Park fountain has colored LED lights in each of the nozzles that can shine on the glistening streams of water. Part of the equipment for the Station Park fountain was actually built by the same company that worked on Disney’s "World of Color."

"It’s an incredible dance of water and light," said Craig Trottier, vice president of development for CenterCal Properties, the developer and owner of Station Park. "It’s unlike anything you’ve seen unless you’ve been to Disneyland and seen the ‘World of Color.’ It’s a really intense show."

Each of the fountain’s 59 water nozzles contains a circle of LED lights that are capable of displaying 3 million colors. Six of those nozzles can move along three axes. Powering the fountain is a "vault" underneath the park that houses computers and water pumps that push through 43,000 gallons of water.

The structure produces one show every hour by playing one of more than 10 choreographed songs, including The Beatles’ "Here Comes the Sun," Frank Sinatra’s "I Could Have Danced All Night" or the opera classic "La Bohème." The fountain will be operational from 10 a.m to 10 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to midnight on weekends.

Station Park officials also unveiled six bronze statues from sculptor Brian Keith that are positioned in and around the fountains.

The new features are part of the 67-acre complex that ultimately will house more than 130 stores and restaurants, an open-air ice skating rink, and a 110-room hotel. More than 30 stores are open, as well as five eateries. Four more restaurants — Roxberry, Subway, ParkStone Wood Kitchen & Bar and Sushi Monster — will open in the next month. Two retailers, Famous Footwear and Dollar Cuts, as well as Monarch Dental, also will open in the next 30 days. In all, another 100 stores will open in the next year.

Station Park, which is at the intersection of I-15, Highway 89 and Legacy Parkway, is the second open-air shopping complex to debut a fountain this year in Utah. The City Creek project in downtown Salt Lake City features three fountains on its property.

"We believe it [the fountain] is a worthy investment to differentiate [the complex] from the everyday shopping," Trottier said. "We’re trying to create an experience, not just shopping."

Tech growth fueling building plans on Salt Lake City's 'Silicon Slopes'

The Wasatch Front boom continues to accelerate. Below a view of Downtown Salt Lake City and it's stunning setting.

"With the Silicon Slopes area market doing
so well, the need for additional Class A commercial space is
increasing rapidly, he said. There is currently about 800,000 square feet
of commercial development, and “that amount could conceivably double
in the next few years.”... "The Thanksgiving Point area, which had a
vacancy rate of 11.4 percent in first quarter of 2011, but was below
3 percent for the same period in 2012. The national average
commercial vacancy rate is 17 percent."

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah’s growing technology industry is prompting major development in the area known as ”Silicon Slopes.”

More than 500,000 square feet of commercial real estate property
is currently under consideration for development along the I-15 corridor
on the border of Salt Lake and Utah counties.

Currently home to high-profile technology firms like Adobe, eBay, IM
Flash and Microsoft, the concentrated technology hub is quickly taking
shape and bringing with it thousands of high-paying jobs and
enhancing Utah’s reputation as a sought-after locale for high
tech.

“This area is being turbo-charged by this growth in the tech sector,”
said Darin Mellott, senior research analyst for commercial real estate firm
CB Richard Ellis. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce last week ranked Utah
as the fourth fastest growing state for technology jobs, he said.

The Salt Lake City Library System released an artist’s rendering and floor plan Thursday for the 18,000-square-foot structure.

...The library was designed by Architectural Nexus with input from residents, according to Patty Steed, library associate director.

"After dozens of community meetings, presentations and workshops," Steed said in a news release, "we are excited to show the residents of the Glendale neighborhood the results of their feedback."

The city will unveil renderings of the planned Glendale Library on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Sorensen Unity Center, 1383 S. 900 West...

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/8...or-growth.html

By Joey Ferguson, Deseret News

Utah was voted one of the best states for future economic prosperity due to its strong job growth and thriving export market, according to a recent report on enterprising states released Wednesday by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

The state was voted one of the top 10 in the nation for long-term and short-term job growth as it experienced a 2.1 percent job growth since April 2011.

The unemployment rate in Utah dropped to 5.8 percent in March, which is more than two percentage points lower than the nation’s 8.1 percent...
