I'll check up on Pullepady bridge and let you know..

Meanwhile, the widening work of the Trissur-Kochi stretch of NH 47 is progressing very rapidly. I passed through the road twice last week, and there was construction almost along the entire distance! Flyovers at Angamaly, Chalakkudy and Aluva are also being constructed.

As for the waste management problem, the district administration has started a blog to receive comments and suggestions from the public about the same. Launched yesterday, the blog hasn't been active at all. If forumers here have opinions regarding the issue, please make your voices heard.

http://wastefreecochin.blogspot.com/

I already posted a comment but it will be displayed only with owner permission.. presumably to prevent people from abusing the govt.

Is this the actual picture of the new bridge? It hardly has enough width for 2 cars to pass by. It shows the lack of planning and vision that exists even for an expansion project. This is just a bridge for bridge sake and except that it will not help to alleviate any real traffic problems of the City! When will we ever get good master planners with the vision and the guts to execute long term strategic projects in infrastructure.

on the treatment plant for that too at Brahmapuram, according to reports.

Can you update us on the status of Pulleppady bridge ? How far has it progressed ?
This photo from Hindu shows its almost complete. Is the portion over rail complete ?

Also what's the status of Venduruthy Thevara parallel bridge ?

This is a display of callousness. But even this is not complete for 6 years !! This is how
things go in Kochi. One in five vehicles in Kerala runs in Kochi. This is the situation.

One more mall -

West Pioneer eyeing southern market

West Pioneer, the Mumbai-based mall development company, is considering a foray into the southern retail market soon.“For our projects in the South, apart from focussing on strategic locations in tier-II cities, we would also consider mixed development with hotels attached to the malls"
....................
Among the south Indian cities, Bangalore, Kochi, Goa and Hyderabad would be the first few locations that the company is considering investing in, Mr Sohonie said.

Here is what I said earlier. Construction started for treatment plant for non-biodegradable
waste.

Stone laid for fuel unit at Brahmapuram

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan inaugurated the solid waste treatment plant of the Kochi Corporation at Brahmapuram on Friday.

The plant has the capacity to process around 300 tonnes of waste every day. This could be enhanced to 500 tonnes at a later stage.

Local Administration Minister Paloli Mohammed Kutty laid the foundation stone for the Refuse Derived Fuel unit that was to be set up at the site of the plant. The unit would be used for treating non-biodegradable waste like plastic.

Vallarpadam works to be speeded up

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: With the Union Minister for Shipping and Surface Transport T.R. Baalu set to review the progress of the proposed Vallarpadam International Container Transhipment Terminal early next month, the district administration and other authorities concerned are set to intensify the work on the rail and road connectivity for the project.

The minister is expected to make the visit in the first week of July, N. Ramachandran, chairman, Cochin Port Trust (CPT), said at a meeting held here on Saturday.

The High Court having delivered its verdict on rehabilitation of those evicted for the connectivity project, the district administration is preparing to provide the much needed momentum to the connectivity works.

District Collector M. Beena said that the district administration would spare no efforts to ensure speeding up the works related to the project.

However, the National Highway Authority of India officials said that though 98 per cent of the land required for the 17.20-km four-lane highway had been acquired, work could not be started in many stretches owing to protests by the people. The district administration would take emergency steps and resolve the issues connected with the acquired land within the next five days. The CPT would approach the court for vacating the stay on cases relating to reclaiming land from the backwaters for the highway connectivity.

Yesterday I passed on through the Gosree Bridges.Vallarpadam works are going on at full pace. So I feel that even if road and rail works are not completed in time terminal will be operational. The work wont stop anyway. What is your opinion, friends? After finishing so much till now there are less chances that the project will be stopped for ever.

Project reports on city flyovers soon

KOCHI: Detailed project reports on flyovers at Kundanoor, Vytilla, Palarivattam and Edappally will be prepared ahead of a meeting of State public works departments with officials of the Central PWD in Delhi on June 24, said Minister for Public Works Mons Joseph here on Saturday. A report on the proposed Coastal Highway and the remaining portion of the Seaport-Airport Road will also be prepared, said the Minister.

A Petta-Vytilla corridor to link National Highways 49 and 47 is also under consideration, he said. The Minister also said that the Cochin Port Trust had requested a four-lane road between Kundanoor and Willingdon Island.

That ICTT will be ready by Nov 2009 is for sure. If rail-road connectivity is not
completed Union govt will have to shell out a 100s of crores as compensation
to Dubai Ports World. It is part of the agreement. This foolish state govt better
act fast. Key problem is in not handing over rehabilitation land to the evictees.
started in 2006, there was enough time not only hand over land but even
to build houses if it wanted. Now the situation is that not even land is ready !!

This is the problem with govt projects , when those projects will come live even an astrologer cant predict ....

Here we are little bit lucky coz there is immense pressure from Central Govt for expediting the project , else these things will remain in paper like others.

Smart City is also lucky coz there was lots of political prestige to be gained , else fate wud have been same like other State Govt IT projects .. Even land acqusition wont get complete , Infopark is facing same fate with its 167 acre expansion which is depending on govt.

I am worried abt Metro Rail , this is one project in Kochi where its totally state govt . God knows when those people will act..

Specialised centre for Athletics coming up

Quote:
KSAA plans Sports City

Principal Correspondent

KOCHI: Minutes after taking over as the new president of the Kerala State Athletics Association (KSAA), Baby Mathew announced a major project for athletes in the State.

We plan to build a Sports City in Kochi. With many major events coming here, we need a permanent training centre, a specialised centre with all modern facilities,” said Mathew, who is also the Managing Director of Jeevan TV, here on Saturday.

“We will need around 20 acres for the project and we will be tapping various sources for funds,” he added. http://www.hindu.com/2008/06/22/stor...2256441800.htm

KCA's Cricket Academy to be at SH Thevara

Being the location of upcoming international cricket stadium Kochi is best suited
for state's cricket academy too. Land for cricket stadium has been identified
at Tripunithra. Govt has to expedite sanction to start construction.

Quote:
KCA’s new academy at SH College

KOCHI: The Kerala Cricket Association will start a full-fledged cricket academy at the Sacred Heart College in Thevara shortly.

“We will have a chief coach — a former player from outside the State — and specialists for batting, bowling and physical fitness,” said the Kerala Cricket Association secretary, T.C. Mathew, after the association’s Central Council meeting here on Friday evening.

“Since Sacred Heart has a nice gym and good facilities for players’ accommodation nearby, we have selected it. And for matches, we will be using the St. Paul’s College ground,” he said.

Apart from senior players, the KCA plans to pick and train a pool of players between 19 and 25 years at the Kochi centre. Plans are also on to start smaller academies in the State’s three zones and to develop a ground at Kottayam after signing an MoU with the Mahatma Gandhi University.

Consultants suggest PPP route for Kochi cruise terminal
Quote:
The much awaited feasibility report and the business plan for the proposed international cruise terminal and public plaza has been submitted to the Cochin Port Trust, wherein consultants have suggested setting up the facilities in public-private-partnership (PPP) mode under the build-operate-transfer (BOT) route. The report, prepared by Mir Projects and Consultants Pvt Ltd, Kochi, and TranSystems, Virginia, US, has estimated an investment of Rs 375 crore for the project. ...

The project comprises building a world-class cruise terminal, a Kerala Village as a major tourist attraction, a 238-room hotel complex, shopping mall and office complex as well as a parking garage.

The port has earmarked 6.71 hectares of land for the project

The total construction cost will add up to more than Rs 285 crore. The study report has put the cost of building the cruise berth at Rs 61.22 crore, cruise terminal building at Rs 40.94 crore, Kerala Village at Rs 6 crore, shopping mall and office tower at Rs 79.57 crore and hotel complex at Rs 83.53 crore. Walkways, a park and bus circuit will be additional facilities.

The consultants pointed out that cruise tourism has emerged as the fastest growing sector of the global tourism industry over the past decade. Among Indian ports, Kochi has been the cruise port in India with maximum cruise calls. The port, located close to the international trunk sea route from Europe to Far East/Australia with a deviation of only 72 nautical miles, prompts cruise liners to take advantage of the tourist attraction.

The port has modern deep water facilities and further development will facilitate the handling of bigger cruise vessels with 360 metres length and beam over 40 metres.

The current financial year will see the port receive 42 vessels, the highest ever in India.

We are really unlucky to have such an idiotic govt who is not only good for nothing but also anti social which encourages strikes and hartals more than any constructive activity. Basic theory is that if communism has to survive there should be poverty and unemployment. When congress rules they will oppose whatever investments they bring and when they rule everything gets confined to papers without giving any sanctions. I really feel ashamed to be a Keralite
