Arrow DOWNTOWN | Mercedes Benz Stadium | 71,041 seats | U/C

At this point it seems a new stadium is all but a done deal.

Falcons stadium backers zero in on design firm

Quote:
The Georgia World Congress Center Authority and the Atlanta Falcons next week begin whittling the list of candidates to design a proposed new retractable-roof stadium downtown.

The 10 applicants include Dallas-based HKS, which designed the much-ballyhooed Cowboys stadium in Arlington, Texas, and tvsdesign of Atlanta, which designed the Georgia Aquarium. Another contender is Kansas City-based Populous, which has already consulted on the new stadium project and designed the London Olympic Stadium.

Other applicants include 360 Architecture, AECOM, Eisenman Architects, Ewing Cole, RGC Stadium Design, Rosetti, and Woods Bagot, the GWCCA said. Tvsdesign’s bid is made in partnership with architects Heery International and Gensler.

The GWCCA and the Falcons plan to choose three to five finalists for the job by Wednesday, officials said.

The 3 to 5 finalist (architects) were supposed to be selected yesterday. Has anyone heard who they are?

They extended the selection deadline to the 28th.

Falcons stadium will be a hard sell, legislators say

Quote:
“It’s hard to get lawmakers to vote for something that’s polling 70-to-30 no,” Gov. Nathan Deal told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “They need to directly communicate with the public. Either way the public attitude has to be significantly changed from where it is now.”

Legislators in 2010 agreed to extend the city’s hotel-motel tax for a stadium. Under the current plan, which calls for the Georgia Dome to be demolished once the new facility is built nearby, the tax proceeds would be used to repay $300 million in construction bonds issued by the GWCCA. The Falcons would finance the rest of the construction cost.

But lawmakers must raise the GWCCA’s borrowing limit from $200 million to $300 million this year for the plan to go forward.

New stadium deal in the works

By Maria Saporta

Quote:
A revised deal for a new stadium currently is being negotiated whereby the Georgia Legislature would not have to vote on increasing the bonding capacity of Georgia World Congress Center to $300 million.

Currently negotiations are underway at the Governor’s mansion between Gov. Nathan Deal, the Atlanta Falcons and the City of Atlanta where the bonding capacity would shift from the state to the city.

No matter which governmental entity would end up issuing the bonds for the $1 billion project, the deal would not change substantially. The $300 million bond package would continue to be backed by the existing hotel-motel taxes that are collected in the City of Atlanta. The Falcons and the National Football League would cover two-thirds of the stadium’s cost.

Why not put the stadium in the old GM factory area off 285 - now vacant, excellent access to MARTA and gets this behemoth out of Downtown.

Dekalb would need to put skin in the game...which ain't gonna happen. The only county crazy enough to vet it would be Cobb.

TOUCHDOWN! Atlanta reaches agreement with Falcons on new stadium

Quote:
Atlanta officials and the Atlanta Falcons reached a deal to build a new $1 billion stadium that addresses most of the concerns raised by the Atlanta City Council and the surrounding communities.

The tentative agreement was announced at a press conference Thursday afternoon at Atlanta City Hall with Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed flanked by Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur M. Blank, Gov. Nathan Deal and 10 members of the Atlanta City Council.

The agreement would include $50 million investments in infrastructure improvements around the new stadium as part of the actual costs of constructing the project.

In a separate development, the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation and Invest Atlanta have each committed to provide $15 million, for a total of $30 million, towards the redevelopment of the English Avenue, Vine City and Castleberry Hill neighborhoods.

The public contribution for stadium construction is capped at $200 million, which would come from the hotel-motel tax collected by the city — almost exclusively (more than 85 percent) from visitors and tourists, not residents of the city. Invest Atlanta would be asked to issue the bonds using the hotel-motel tax that currently supports the Georgia Dome. The existing hotel-motel tax revenue stream is the sole public funding source for the stadium construction and any risk associated with repayment is carried by the bond holders, not the city.

Site of Falcons new stadium...

Has the site of the new stadium been determined yet? I read a post a few days ago (I don't remember exactly where in the forum) that it looks like the site most likely to be chosen will be south of the Georgia Dome? I'm not sure if that is accurate. Does anyone know? Is the location narrowed down to north or south of the Georgia Dome or is there still a chance it could go elsewhere such as in one of the suburbs? Thank you in advance!

Here is an image of both potential sites.

The south site is much preferred because it would have convenient access to a Marta station. Now that the Falcons and the city have reached a tentative agreement, any talk of moving to the suburbs is moot. That deal reached is not dependent on getting the south site because the north site is already owned by the GWCC.

Btw, there are actually 2 MARTA stops - the Dome/World Congress/Philips Arena one and the Vine City one just west. I suspect there will be some enhancements made to the Vine City station just west across the street. (There is also the Olmsted Mims Park site nearby that has a good chance of being built too - check out the video - it's incredible!).With the potential for the multi-modal center a block away, I'd argue that the dome will be the most accessible stadium in the country. Fans (think new college football championship games) could come straight from the airport to the dome.

smArTaLlone, thank you very much for the information and image. I'm glad the stadium will remain downtown - I'm already imagining some great views of the downtown Atlanta 'scrapers from various vantage points inside the open air stadium...

Here's the other retractable roof NFL stadiums. I like the way the one in Indy looks almost like some giant factory or something.

University of Phoenix Stadium - GLendale, Ariz

Reliant Stadium - Houston

Lucas Oil Stadium - Indianaopolis

Cowboys Stadium - Arlington, TX

So if it were up to you, what you put on the site of the current Dome when it's walls come tumbling down? You just know the inclination is going to be a parking deck/lot.

How about an amphitheater with parking underneath perhaps; that could be agreat amenity for the complex.

Any other ideas out there?

I really think Blank wants to do something really nice. I think they'll do a plaza of some sorts- I don't think it will be surface parking. I think it would be great to create a landscaped plaza that provides connection to the MARTA station, the 'decks' parking and the new multi-modal center.

Didn't they already agree to extend the hotel tax to pay for the stadium? Wouldn't the time to discuss what to do with the funds have been before that vote? The votes in on where the money will go, how does it make sense to change that (is it even legally possible) after the voting already took place?
