Even though it is in use, I would not mark this complete until the roof is 100% automated and operational.

I heard on local radio that the roof will not open again this season. I wonder is that only Falcons because I saw where ATL United intended to have it open on the 22nd.

It would appear that the MBS roof we a little ahead of its time. A typical problem in construction, architects who are a little out of touch with engineers, or vice versa. In addition it appears that the complex nature of the computer program to open and close the roof may be a stretch as present. In addition, the weight of the structure does not adjust to subtle closure designs. Safety may also be an issue. In any case, it doesn't appear to have any bearing on the Falcon's second half flaws.

And now it's just about closed, blinking red lights during the closing process, blinking stopped just short of closed, now blinking again

Edit a couple minutes later: now seems to be complete, no light gaps between petals, blinking stopped

Edit a few more minutes later: Blinking comes and goes now

I managed to look up at a tb screen at the airport seconds before the dome’s implosion. Really hoping my flight out gets a good view.

Yes. The designer of the roof, Erleen Hatfield, partner at Buro Happold who did the engineering says so. The tight schedule of getting the building to the point of occupation pushed off the testing and adjustment phase of the roof build. It will open and close all day long but not on it's own. 8 petals of 500-550 tons each can't just be jerked around sitting on the roof, it must be a ballet to maintain proper flex/deflection.

Ok, then we should expect this to work as designed sometime in 2018?

Yes. 5 months from the last time they opened which was October is the goal for full automation or, just in time for Atlanta United's first game. The roof opens and closes just fine, it's just not automated.

There was an hour long show about the construction of the stadium on the Science Channel, takes you right up to the first Falcons pre-season game. Shows you some amazing things about the roof and the hinges that damn near snapped when they were lowering them to let the roof/trusses put their weight on the 19 concrete piers on the perimeter. Lots of sound/vid bites of Avery Martin (Derr-Isbell) who was in charge of the steel raising and Erleen Hatfield, partner of Buro Happold, the engineering firm who designed the roof & petals.
