Great find. Had no idea they were that far along.

I was up at Lagoon on Thursday of last week. I was chaperoning a high school trip... there were probably 12,000 students at the park that day, but I digress. The steel for the new coaster was up to about 40-50 feet. It's going to be big... my only fear is this: a regular admissions ticket to the park will not include this mega coaster. They will charge an extra fee to ride it. It is located by the extreme rides that aren't included with a standard day pass. If this happens it will be a crying shame.

I think it's stupid that Lagoon has any rides at all that cost extra. A patron pays to go to the park, they should be able to visit the WHOLE park. The major parks like Six Flags or Universal don't do this (as far as I know, and I've visited them more recently than I've visited Lagoon). I think it actually hurts their patronage numbers. If the best rides cost more, why go?

...is this something you've heard, or just something you're worried about?

It's built beyond the existing park's north boundary, but I assumed the park would expand out enough to surround it. That's how they brought Wicked into the park a few years back--built the massive thing to the west, then expanded the park around it. Figured that'd do the same for the new one.

As for things like the Catapult and the Skycoaster (I've done the Skycoaster...holy crap never again never again), it makes sense there's an additional fee. They can only accommodate two riders at a time, it takes at least three employees to get those two riders into position and operate the equipment...it's not a roller coaster. If they did the additional fee for a coaster, that'd be a big departure from how Lagoon (and Six Flags, and other parks) run things. If anything, they'll jack up one day admission prices another ten bucks to cover it.

I seem to remember that Knotts Berry Farm in California charged extra to ride its 2004 roller coaster Silver Bullet. However, my last Google search can't find any mention of an extra fee, so maybe they had one and have since got rid of it. I wouldn't doubt that there will be an extra charge to ride the new coaster while it is new and hip and all - but once the 'newness' effect has worn off, I expect they will drop the fee. It makes sense from a business standpoint.

Jedi, it's something that I'm worried about. If it is free, it will free up Wicked and The Fire Dragon next summer, which is a good thing.

I remember them advertising the crap out of "The Bat" and "Bombora" when those rides were new.... after riding those rides last week my thoughts were the following, "These would be good rides to prep your kids for going to a REAL amusement park."

This is an awesome thread, but not as awesome as the new 200FT roller-coaster that is being built right now on the park's north end.

lagoon is so awesome! I wish we had something unique like lagoon in Denver.

All of our roller coasters are cookie cutter off the shelf roller coasters that you can find at any theme park in America. Six flags denver sucks compared to lagoon.

Its cool to see all the new roller coasters getting built at lagoon

Update on the new Lagoon Ride

http://www.kutv.com/news/top-stories...id_13547.shtml

Lagoon Reveals Details About New Ride
KUTV

Quote:
Lagoon revealed new details about their upcoming attraction Thursday.

The ride will be in the North field of Lagoon and will be the tallest attraction in the park at 208 feet. The attraction will be custom built, and primarily developed and manufactured locally. Over 75% of vendors, contractor and suppliers are based in Utah.

"We have named it Cannibal because in our collective mind it will eat other roller coasters in their tracks," said Julie Freed, spokesperson for Lagoon.

It will include an underground tunnel, three inversions, 70 mph maximum speeds and the 208 foot tower, which riders will go to the top then take a steep drop.

'Cannibal' has been under construction for two years and is set to open in 2015.

I think Lagoon did this right.

Building a custom one-of-a-kind ride, and a majority exclusive design and build with local companies is a win-win for everyone in the state.

Lagoon>Sick Flags

I can't wait to visit SLC and check it out next summer.

Wow, this is going to be intense. A drop of 208 feet at 116 degrees? I am genuinely excited for this. Lagoon is the best!
