My city is treated fairly. It's still a misleading metric for comparisons, and always needs context.

It doesnt matter, no density ranking will please everyone. The metro area weighted density and urban area density rankings are also informative but Im sure the same chorus of deeply offended naysayers will chime in...

Mesa is not denser than Phoenix at all, the problem is the city limits do not coincide with the actual population of the city, They city owns massive areas of uninhabited desert in the far north and hundreds of square miles of mountain preserves that it treats as city parks, vastly expanding the city sqr miles beyond the actual development.

...you know Honolulu's CDP would probably be over 400,000 and make the first list you posted if East Honolulu didn't separate itself in 2010. Using the old CDP boundaries -- I think it's referred to as a CCD now it was 390,738 in 2010.

What is there to discuss then? What you posted was something you might pull from Wikipedia. So what did you want to discuss? That Wikipedia has it wrong? That Wikipedia needs to update their numbers? That whether this is a significant statistic at all?

Interesting.

What areas are East Honolulu? Hawaii Kai? Kahala?

^Yep, basically from the Wai'alae Country Club east to Makapu'u Point. I'm not exactly sure why they separated but I suspect that it had a lot to do with politics (mostly Republican) & wealth (lots of rich people). In 2010 that equaled to about 50,000 people.

"Deeply offended naysayers" says the guy on the verge of hysterics in many of his nearly twenty posts in the thread.

"chorus of deeply offended naysayers"?

hyperbole much?

no one is deeply offended, you just have A LOT of people in this thread pointing out that city limits density numbers don't mean a whole lot taken on their own.

and they're a terrible comparison tool because they don't compare apples to apples.

just because i happen to disagree with you doesn't mean that i am deeply offended. don't be ridiculous.

Ok but let's move on, this back and forth is completely unnecessary.

This is in the center of Phoenix city limits. Preserve lands, entire mountain ranges, city parks that are massive, and have a population of 0.

Here is another area of the city of Phoenix. It's the largest city park in the U.S. and one of the largest in the world at 26 square miles [population 0].

In this picture, you can see all the other mountains to the north that entirely lie within the city limits of Phoenix.

Good points^. San Diego is one of the densest cities by weighted density, but much much lower in city limit density due to the hundreds of square miles of unpopulated mountainous land within city limits. Much like Phoenix, the city is one of the largest in land area in the US.

Also the Airport, also the undeveloped State Trust land in the north end of the city and the (sometimes 2 miles wide) river bed that runs through the whole thing.

Four pages of arguing about something that might materially change the positioning of one or two cities on the original list, lol.

Yes, it was easier when I was in NYC and was the uncontested winner of everything.
