I remember with some fondness the 300-500 feet given for cars to either merge or die when getting on 90/94. They were particularly rough during rush hour.
The Madison overpass was done up for the '96 convention, since delegates had to go from downtown to the United Center, and Madison was still something of a Skid Row. That's also when Daley put in the median planters on Madison.

Later on, IDOT and CDOT renovated the other overpasses one by one using the same design.

The rust is a shame, it's a poor design that traps moisture and salt and can't be cleaned - but the faded colors are simply a result of inevitable UV damage. The Damen bridge over the North Branch, and the Puerto Rican flags on Division had the same problem, you can't really paint steelwork red unless you're prepared to repaint it constantly. The Golden Gate Bridge in SF is continuously being repainted.

I know Madison was re-done for the convention, but I moved here in 2001 and it was a matter of years later that they really started doing these. I remember seeing the first one and thinking how much nicer it was than the old rusted crap, then as the years went by in the mid 2000's they kept doing them and they were all falling part.

Whoops I just saw this was posted above me!!

I remember those ramps as well, it was the absolute worst when traffic was getting really heavy, but not heavy enough yet to bring it down below 50mph. You'd just gun it and hold your breath. At least during normal lighter traffic most people knew to stay away from that left lane as you'd get company really quick.

^Nice photos.

I think this one is officially known as 727 W Madison (I guess that's catchier than 1 S Halsted?). Some additional renderings:

I didn’t realize how tall this will look compared to SkyBridge. Pleasant surprise. That rendering also makes me really want to see the Kennedy covered from at least Randolph to Adams. Would really build the connection between east of the highway and west of the highway.

Drove by this one going northbound on 90/94 last night. Looks very imposing from the expressway. I love how even now it really helps add to the whole "boxed in" feeling on that stretch of the Kennedy. Can't wait until its nothing but a wall of skyscrapers on both sides between the circle and the cave.

March 1 Update. Beautiful glass and curves. Massive podium will be key to street level experience along Halsted. Still very much tbd imo.
