But this statement of yours is at best anecdotal. Pure, cold, hard data will almost certainly prove that the majority of the millennial American generation does not live in an urban environment.

I think both.

I think it's millennials and empty nesters. I know quite a few who have moved downtown from the suburbs.

More anecdotes:

My condo association in River North has 13 residential units in a collection of vintage 2-4 story buildings.

I'm a GenX tech worker that bought in with Orbitz IPO money. 14 years here.
The guy across the hall was a financial analyst GenX, 15 years but the last two had moved out and lists it on Airbnb.
There are Millennials who are in with help from the East Coast father of one of them in another unit. One is a photographer, the other a construction worker. 2 years.
Retirees whose main home is in Michigan. 16 years.
Investors from London who rent out a unit. ~6 years.
Physician, newly married with child. 12 years.
Lawyers, no kids, married. 39 years.
Older Millennial. 5 years.
Business owner, older end of GenX. 2 units for an office. 10 years
Hairdresser, formerly married to live-in architect, older GenX. ~20 years.
Millennial. 2 years.
Former owner/occupier now in Texas, GenX, for sale. ~8 years.

And there is also a commercial unit, small retail shop previously owned by long-term small investor now owned by a local management company.

And now we're surrounded by Exhibit, Hensley, Marlow, and Ardus, all rentals, with Gallery and the former Ed Debevics only a block away, for more rentals, most of the new faces on the streets seem to be Millennials. At least one of the nearby renters works at a neighborhood steakhouse as a manager. Some probably work at the varied tech-related or tech-enabled startups in the nearby vintage warehouse buildings.

.....just a side observation: I have no idea where these immigrants live, as Libertyville is about as white as it gets
Pretty interesting to see where cities are losing as a percentage: LA, San Diego, Phoenix, San Antonio, Tucson. All metros near the border. And some older, not very foreign cities far from the border like Cleveland, but metros further from the border with ties to the losing cities seem to be gaining. Of course Florida is gaining a lot, presumably from the Caribbean. Are Puerto Ricans born on the island still considered native for this survey? I know they're citizens by birth, just with the big increases in Florida I wondered if that played any role.

Just an assumption, but LA and SD I would probably attribute to the cost of living. SF may be able to overcome this with the huge influx of foreign tech workers. Just a guess.

Speaking of signs, Trunk Club just put up a big sign on the warehouse across Ohio from Red Frog Events so now you are greeted with new age Millenial shit on both sides upon your main approach to River North from the highway.

Looks like United is throwing their 850k sqft of weight around...

United Airlines exploring Willis Tower departure
Amazon's competition for its second headquarters has elicited Chicago developers' grandest plans, and now one of the city's biggest companies is weighing the possibility of leaving its home for one of them.

With an option to break from its massive lease at Willis Tower more than four years away, Chicago-based United Airlines has had discussions in recent months with developers behind some of the city's largest proposed office projects about a potential new headquarters location, according to sources familiar with the company.

The tire-kicking exercise is believed to be preliminary and it's unclear whether the airline seriously intends to depart its 850,000-plus square feet at the city's tallest skyscraper when its termination option comes up in March 2023.

Only companies started by Boomers and older should be allowed signage.

Listen to your heart: Endotronix gets $45M funding for IoT heart monitor

https://www.builtinchicago.org/2018/...ries-d-funding

Quote:
Endotronix, a Lisle, IL-based company that uses IoT technology to help monitor and fight cardiovascular issues, announced the raise of a Series D funding totaling $45 million.

“This funding will take us through to commercialization of our Cordella Heart Failure software system and the pulmonary artery sensor,” said John Flavin, CEO. “The [funding] allows us to carry out the remaining human clinical trials and commercialize the platform over the course of the next several months.”
Quote:
The team at Endotronix has grown significantly in a short time, quadrupling its headcount from 20 to 80 over two years.

Flavin is expecting to hire clinical and regulatory staff to carry out international clinical trials, and sales and marketing roles to back their commercialization efforts.

Leading Global IT and Cybersecurity Technology Firm Relocates Headquarters to Chicago

They were in Oakbrook Terrace, but still a good signal of moves to the city still.

https://www.cityofchicago.org/city/e...OneSpanHQ.html

Quote:
Mayor Emanuel today joined OneSpan CEO Scott Clements to open the company’s global headquarters in Chicago at 121 W. Wacker Drive. OneSpan relocated its headquarters to downtown Chicago in March to address the growing need for engaged, forward-thinking and energetic tech talent and has already grown its office to nearly 50 people since its move.
Quote:
“OneSpan’s continued global leadership in identity security is made possible by the wealth of talent at our doorstep in the downtown Chicago area,” said OneSpan CEO, Scott Clements. “The city’s abundance of qualified candidates, its solid infrastructure, and its attractive lifestyle bolster Chicago’s emerging reputation as a major technology hub that will amplify the growth of technology companies like OneSpan.”

Tech continues to be Chicago’s fastest growing industry sector, employing more than 143,000 working with more than 4,000 digital companies – one of the largest tech talent pools in the United States.
Quote:
In addition to Chicago, OneSpan has global operations in Montreal, Brussels, Zurich, Tokyo and several other cities. The company employs more than 700 employees in 23 countries. It has over 10,000 customers, including more than half of the world’s top 100 banks, including U.S. Bank, HSBC, and Deutsche Bank.

In regards to the post a little over a week ago from another source talking about foreign born population, I looked at the MSA for Chicago.

FYI. "N.E.C." stands for "Not Elsewhere Classified". I think it may be, for example, that someone just merely said they were from Africa instead of a specific country. Not 100% sure though..
FYI #2: People born in Mexico actually increased by 672 people but in the city decreased by over 11,000. However, from 2010 to 2017, the decrease in the metro area was by over 50,000 people. Perhaps there can continue this small increase for a few more years even if it doesn't get back those 50,000+.

This is all from the 1 year ACS, table B05006

Also last Friday, GDP for MSA for 2017 was released. Percentage increase wise from 2016 to 2017 of course nothing amazing (to be expected), however there were a few surprises because this is who the Chicago MSA outperformed percentage wise from 2016 to 2017. This is in chained 2009 dollars..

NYC, Houston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, St. Louis, Kansas City, New Orleans, Milwaukee, Memphis, etc.

Of course, pure amount wise Chicago was 11th out of 59 MSAs I looked at.

That data from China is odd. It was one of the largest gainers from 2010-2017 but one of the largest losers from 2016-17?
