Looks like St. John's has its first homicide of the year. I was really hoping we'd have a murder-free year, but that may be out the window now.

A man was shot at a home on Portugal Cove Road in St. John’s last night and later pronounced dead at the scene.
An autopsy will have to confirm the cause of death, but police have since launched a murder investigation in connection with the shooting.
The RNC have said a second person was also injured in the incident last night, taken to hospital — with what have been described as injuries that are not believed to be life threatening — and later released.
The name of the man killed is not being released at this time.
RNC were called to the home on Portugal Cove Road shortly after 10:30 p.m. last night. The caller reported hearing at least one gunshot, according to RNC Const. Suzanne FitzGerald.
The man was apparently dead when police arrived.
FitzGerald spoke with reporters at RNC headquarters in St. John’s at 1 p.m. today. She said no arrests have been made at this time in connection with the case.
This is despite the fact the RNC special tactics team were on Fahey Street in Kilbride this morning. The attendance of the team to the street was in connection to the previous night's shooting, FitzGerald said, releasing no information as to what the connection might be.
The RNC is still interviewing witnesses and gathering information at both locations. However, FitzGerald said, investigators believe it was a targeted attack and that people in the city are not in any immediate danger.
They have made a direct plea that a person of interest in the case — 25-year-old Philip Wayne Pynn. “We believe that he has details crucial to this investigation,” FitzGerald said, also stating it is believed Pynn was present at the shooting.

The St. John's murderer has been caught and charged with second degree murder, the victim was his friend.

I was reading this at work earlier today, such a terrible story.

RE St. John's murder: Why am I not surprised that this murder had something to do with drugs/theft/general underworld sketchiness. This place is going straight to hell in a hand basket. I'd expect a few more of these types of events to start creeping up very shortly.

It's ironic; wealth brings some of the same problems as poverty.

This is not the first time an innocent child has been caught in the crossfire in Hobbema. I used to have to go there for work occasionally, the place just makes me want to weep.

No, but they are a huge problem in the native community...especially on the prairies

Frightening things happen on first nations reserves. Big city crime in a small town environment. The Conne River reserve here in Newfoundland is a pretty stable community, however my father who works in Calgary and it's surrounding areas have told me some horrific stories of driving through some of Alberta's reserves.

It's even worse in fly-in communities. On an almost monthly basis, people from Southern Ontario are arrested in Thunder Bay for trafficking prescription drugs while on their way to fly-in communities. We have newsworthy drug busts about every two weeks, and they only put a dent into the drug trade up here.

That's the problem with giving provinces the bulk of the social responsibilities and removing their authority from First Nations. There is a void of responsibilities above First Nations governments. The federal government only provides about half of the funding for social services that a province provides to its municipalities for the same services, without giving First Nations the rights over resources and property ownership that provinces and their municipalities have. It's a recipe for economic and social disaster.

That's not entirely a band issue. (Ideally, they wouldn't do that.) The law gives them a disproportionate amount of control over that money and they keep a lot of it, and it isn't really wrong for them to do so.

The Indian Act has to be abolished or at least amended to prevent those kinds of things. Aboriginals can't change those laws. All Canadians will have to fight for that change.

Winnipeg woman may be facing 5th, 2nd degree murder charge, as man dies in hospital 2 days after 4 other people died in a deliberately set fire in the city's Point Douglas neighborhood. Winnipeg police has a new policy that discourages local media from releasing the updated number of homicides. While we have about 20 so far this year. We are well behind Edmonton for the unfortunate title of murder capital of Canada.

St. John's is potentially reporting homicide 2 (and maybe even 3) as of today. It may be too soon to judge, but this could be a murder/suicide case. Even so, two or three homicides in the run of 2 weeks is abnormally rare for this city, when the current homicide rate for the city is only about 2 homicides a year.
