Wow, I feel like I jinxed this. I kid you not I was thinking of this area, as I have never really been down this way and saw some nice buildings I wanted to photograph on Cobourg and Tormey, and though about photographing this building. Whenever I think of something, coincidentally it just pops into my life for real...

I was worried about the pink brick, as it reminded me of this building, which i swear is more pink and ugly in person. (I remember what was there before it was bulldozed and this crappy, should-have-stayed-in-suburbia design was introduced into Hintonburg).

I'm glad that we're seeing some interest in this part of Rideau Street, but I'm disappointed that they would be demolishing the really great (looks to be in fine condition)
heritage building on the corner. Although that empty space is a bit awkward. I guess it would be next to impossible for them to be convinced to preserve this building, but may shift it right to the corner so they have more space?

Also, can someone please teach me how to extract images from these PDFs to share as an image on here? I really would like to know how to do this.

Easiest way is to press print screen, crop in a photo editor like Paint or Paint.net, then upload to Flickr or other photo sharing site.

imgur.com is the easiest photo-sharing site to link to.

I expect we will see a flurry of new proposals on Rideau between King Edward and the river in the next year, So many lots have been bought up for developers but they had to wait for the recently completed utility upgrades to proceed.

I can't believe they want to tear down that awesome red house...

Hmmm so-so... I mean it's not boring rectangle brick building and it is a bit visually intriguing but it's no masterpiece...

What is that big sort of office building right in front of it in the renders??

Also, why are parts of Rideau St. still zoned so low? (for like... 6 floors) Rideau St. is a main road/avenue in downtown/central part of Ottawa. It has all the amenities close to it and transit at the door. If it was me, the whole street (from the canal to the river) would be zoned for a minimum of 30 stories, THEN if someone proposed a 35 or 40 story building we can review carefully and take extra measures to analyze if zoning height can be increased. Having all these extra steps and changes to zoning for a 16 story building on Rideau is a waste of time, doesn't the City have more pressing matters to attend to??

There is so much going on in this initial render... black base, followed by horrible pink brick, followed by white cladding(?), followed by blue glass!? What the heck is happening! Did someone think, let's throw all the materials we can think of together and build it!? Yikes!

That being said, I lived at 8 Tormey until August 2013 and this area is already ridiculous for traffic with Tormey connecting St Patrick (via Cobourg) to Charlotte. Bad proposal.

This City will forever save mediocre buildings like these;

While approving demolition of important heritage buildings like these, without debate;

All of these photos are taken from the PDF slides. It looks like it will allow for retail, restaurants, offices, and residences. Parking is in the rear, coming onto Cobourg.

Note: the pink is actually redbrick.

Yes, I did! Thanks to WaterlooWarrior and Harley613. I realized my computer sometimes has an option for screen capture.

I'll hold back on my opinion on this project until I see more detailed and professional renders. The mixed-use and height are likely appropriate for the area, but I find the tower a bit bulky.

Summer Solstice is at least that far north. I think The Photographer's Ephemeris is still "free" for use on PCs. If you download it you can find out for yourself where the sun and moon rise and set for any day of a year.

My old building had 125 units and two visitor spots and we managed. Also you couldn't park in the spots between 12-6 am. I never understood that part.

Hilariously, the by-law calls for 0.2 spots per unit of visitor parking. So for 125 units, in theory there should be 25. Ridiculous overkill. Luckily it is almost never followed.

Yea that's ridiculous. Considering underground parking spaces are relatively expensive. I know a strata that had about 12 visitor spots and decided to sell all but 2 of them to owners to bring in extra revenue
