Wow, didn't know that. Hy's has had a great old world charm to it. I hope they won't change that and go "Keg style".

Not really any perceptible changes to the main room. Most of the renos are to better utilize the upstairs space.

Did the high end Rob Feenie concept that Cactus was going to build in gastown get scrapped?

Saw signs up at 1368 Robson that Cora's is "opening soon". They confirmed it will be a couple months before they're open. Someone told me it used to be a schnitzel house or something. (before my time). But I personally am looking forward to it living only a block away

Cora has great breakfast selection and it would be nice to have one in Downtown.

Great news! I am sure Cora will help to strengthen that middle part of Robson.

Reno's at Broadway and Main is closing to make way for a new restaurant from Fable (Kits) owners.

That intersection deserves better/livelier. And so be it.

The Tim Hortons / Wendy's on Brunette Avenue has been completely renovated. Interesting that it was kept as a Wendy's, despite Burger King owning Tim Hortons now. Perhaps the Wendy's deal is still going on? One would think many more Burger Kings appearing after the deal expires.

Without the time to go back through this thread, has it been mentioned that Kamei Royale is closing in December and then relocating to somewhere on Hastings Street in the spring?

I was there for lunch today and the menu had been drastically shrunk down.

News to me.
Where on Hastings? Close to Burrard or the grittier side?

That's prime 2nd floor retail, I suppose.

Going from memory, I think it was 1066 or 1166 West Hastings.

Kamei won't be the only restaurant bailing on Alberni in the next few years. I know of one major one out looking for premises elsewhere, given that they could face huge rental rate increases come rollover time.

Thanks - I wonder if Tiffany's would expand upstairs?

****

Five Guys on Robson had a fire or flood last week.
I think its still closed and the windows are still papered over.

No surprise here:

ManCakes Bakery closing Robson Street store
http://www.vancitybuzz.com/2015/11/m...-street-store/

Strange concept to begin with.
Guys aren't into cupcakes with fatty sweet icing (I also wonder how long the expensive greasy donut fad will last).
You'd do better with a protein cakery.

So is it multiple restaurants going into the same space? Kind of makes sense actually, the Subeez space was large, and the restaurant industry is moving away from single, massive seater restaurants.

Not sure, but that's what it seem to be.

They did an awful job of renovating the patio enclosure on Smithe - they used heavy 4x4 wood beams to replace the cable fence.
The uprights are still the same (rather phallic) ones that are integral to the Bing Thom building.

And @ the Man Cakes - what where they thinking opening up a Robson storefront.. I am surprised they even lasted/held out this long.

Must have been a fire at Five Guys, then.
Remember walking by with customers on the street and a fire truck in the alley next to it.

Guess I have to live with Fat Burger... any other recommendations in the DT core?

BTW there are some weird icon options on this forum.

that expensive japanese restaurant in the old bodega space shut down last week and something new is going in, sorry i can't remember the link, but kinda surprised/sad to see that the japanese place couldn't make it, i wonder if they opened in say the alberni area if it would have been more successful for such a pricey place.
