Toronto is the skyline that I feel change the most(in a good way) at night.
My favourits are:

NYC
HK
Toronto
Chicago

They are all great in they'r own way.

Surely it is Hong Kong.

I realise that the question, like so many, is subjective but at night Hong Kong is at present unbeatable.

Daytime there are several contenders but at night the view of HK island is "wowful"

EXACTLY! The Hong Kong night skyline wins in both size, diversity and impressiveness at this point in time.

Also, Giallo: That 2nd shot of Shanghai you posted blew me away. Very nice! My favorite skyline shots are taken mid-skyscape, like in the mix of all the tall buildings, so I really enjoyed that one. New background photo for my desktop!

This is kind of like saying that NA night skylines suck because the houses aren't lit up. And as Ch.G, Ch.G said, they are unnoticable at night.

Man, most people admit that Hong Kong's is the best and its still not enough for staff.

In case you didn't notice people were posting pics of North America by default, its quite obvious that its a contest between only 3 or 4 skylines in the world..

PA Pride,
Unless you want to photograph the Lujiazui cluster, the only way to take skyline shots of Shanghai's various skylines is from mid-air.

I'm not impressed by Hong Kong's night skyline to the point where I would rank it as number 1. It is nice, couldn't argue that, but besides the Bank of China, The Centre, and the IFC, what else is really there?

It's kind of easy to see why Hong Kong's night skyline would be so impressive, or at least appealing to the masses. In R@ptor's nighttime panorama, the best lit buildings look to be all erected in the past ten or fifteen years or so when lighting technology and design had reached a much more advanced state; instead of sole crowns being illuminated, entire buildings -- bottom to top -- were. In most U.S. cities -- especially HK's two chief rivals -- the stock of tall and supertall buildings was erected well before these developments in lighting occurred. Hence, crowns, spire and antennae are the principal objects of illumination. Beautiful, understated and tasteful though they may be, they don't quite pop at night the way more recent buildings do.

Does anyone have any figures or input on light pollution or the amount of energy needed to sustain such night skyline?

Your blind, head over heels ambition for New York is overwhelming sometimes man. What kind of stupid logic is subtracting the best buildings in the skyline and then saying what else is there?

What if you subtracted the empire state building, the chrysler building and rockefeller center what else is there?

There's lots left in both cities. That's the answer.

I really like this shot by RFCGRAPHICS and still missing some more buildings that look nice at night. But yeah Hong Kong does also a great job with its skyline.

LA is my favorite city in the world but I've never been that big a fan of its night time skyline until I saw that second photo posted by DaveofCali. Stunning . . . but still no Hong Kong

Glad you liked it, PA.

Here's a shot of Shanghai's lesser seen skyline in Puxi. It's a pretty good nighttime skyline. I like it better than Pudong's.

I imagine a skyline shot taken from the upper parts of the Golden Magnolia Plaza would be quite cool - in the sense that everything from Lujiazui to Hongqiao would be visible.
I'll note that on my to-do list.

6. Cincinnati
7. Hong Kong
8. Seattle
9. Vancouver
10. Dubai

I like the skylines that have different color lights, that's the reason some cities are lower or higher than expected.
No matter what your criteria, that list looks suspect

You like "different color lights" but rank Hong Kong below Cincinnati? Ok.
